CPU error light on MSI motherboard - help!

I just built a new PC with an MSI B550 motherboard. Everything seemed to be working, but now the red CPU error light on the motherboard is staying on and the system won't boot. I've double checked all the connections but can't figure out what's wrong. Has anyone else encountered this issue or have suggestions on what to try next?

A few things to check:

  1. Make sure the CPU is seated properly in the socket and the lever is fully locked in place. An improperly seated CPU can cause that error light.
  2. Verify you have the CPU power connector from the power supply plugged into the motherboard near the CPU socket. It's a 4+4 pin connector.
  3. Try reseating the RAM. Make sure the modules click securely into the slots.
  4. Clear the CMOS by removing the battery for a few minutes then putting it back. This will reset the BIOS settings to default.

A few more things to try in addition to the great suggestions above:

  • Reseat the RAM. Make sure the modules click securely into the slots. Try booting with just a single RAM stick installed.
  • Disconnect all unnecessary components from the motherboard (drives, expansion cards, etc.) and see if it boots with minimal hardware installed.
  • If you have another compatible CPU available, try that in the board to isolate if it's a CPU issue or board problem.
  • As a last resort, if nothing else works, you may need to RMA the board for a replacement if it's still under warranty.

Coming back to this with a couple things I remember seeing in some technical deep dives lately. Im not 100 percent sure, but I think I heard that some early B550 bios versions had weird stability issues with certain memory controllers, so you might want to consider checking that.

  • I recall reading somewhere that the BIOS Flashback feature can be super finicky if the USB drive isnt formatted exactly to FAT32 with a small partition size. Just be careful if you try to flash it.
  • I would suggest checking the mounting pressure on your cooler. If its too tight, it can actually warp the board slightly and cause pin contact issues IIRC.
  • Make sure to check the CPU socket for any tiny bits of dust. Even one speck can mess with the logic gates according to some data sheets I was looking at. I actually spent way too long yesterday researching the VRM efficiency ratings on these specific boards because I was bored. The power delivery specs are actually really impressive for the price point, but I really miss the old dragon logos MSI used to put on everything. It looked so much cooler than the minimalist stuff they do now. Anyway, but yeah.

I have same issue last year. I just reinstalled CPU, the problem resolved.
