sorry if this is a dumb question but Im totally lost with these cpu names. im building my first pc to edit 4k family videos from my drone and honestly have no idea what to get. my budget is around 400-500 bucks just for the processor and im in the us. i want something that wont freeze up when im scrubbing through footage.

  • needs to handle 4k footage smoothly
  • budget is 400-500
  • mostly just using premiere pro

is i9 overkill or do i really need that much power? just want to get this done before summer starts so i can finally edit my trip footage. what intel chip should i actually look for?

Just grab the Intel Core i5-14600K 14-Core Processor! It is amazing for 4K editing and saves you cash for a better SSD or more RAM. You will love it!

Honestly, grab the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core Processor! It is the sweet spot for 4K editing and way better value than an i9. If you want to save a bit, the Intel Core i7-13700K 16-Core Processor is still fantastic for Premiere. TL;DR: Go with the 14700K! It crushes 4K footage without breaking a sweat, and you wont regret the extra cores when scrubbing through clips. Trust me, it is amazing for the price!

Regarding what was mentioned about the high-end chips, honestly I had issues with thermals on those newer i7s. They run super hot. I think you might be better off looking at slightly older architecture if you want stability. IIRC the power draw is just insane lately.

  • watch your cooling solution
  • check your motherboard VRMs
  • dont stress too much about the i9, it might actually throttle on you if your case airflow is bad anyway

Late to the party, but honestly, those new chips can be a nightmare if your cooling isn't perfect. I've been building PCs for years and stability is everything when you're mid-project. Before you commit, I gotta know:

  • What kind of cooler are you planning to run?
  • How much RAM are you pairing with this build? Don't rush the parts list, seriously. It's not worth the headache if everything crashes during a render.
