Which websites allow private wishlist sharing with family members?

So I am finally pulling the trigger on this massive family blowout for my 40th birthday in Seattle this August and I am honestly so pumped. It has been like five years since we were all in one place and I really want to make it special. Since I have been the designated tech support person for my parents and siblings forever

  • I literally set up their home networks and manage their cloud backups - they are all looking at me to organize the gift registry or wishlist situation for the big party so there are no duplicates.

Normally I would just throw together an Amazon list and call it a day but I have run into this super annoying issue where the Amazon universal wishlist button doesnt really scrape metadata from other boutique sites properly anymore. Plus the privacy settings are super clunky if you want a list that is strictly invite-only but also allows people to see what has been bought without spoiling the surprise for me. I have been doing this for years for Christmas but this specific use case is kicking my butt for some reason.

I am looking for something with a really clean UI that is mobile-responsive because my aunt is basically tech-illiterate and will lose it if the interface is too cluttered or full of ads. I need to be able to add stuff from niche hobby sites

  • I have got my eye on some specific espresso gear that is around $500 for a group gift and some smaller camping stuff under $40 - and I want to be able to just send a private link or use a password for a specific group of people. I tried Elfster but it feels way too geared toward Secret Santa stuff with the whole drawing names thing which we dont want. Does anyone know of a solid aggregator that lets you keep everything private but actually works with a browser extension for easy adding from any site? I am mostly worried about privacy and making sure the data isnt just being sold to every advertiser the second we sign up...

> I need to be able to add stuff from niche hobby sites Honestly, Giftful is your best bet. Its free, the extension works on niche sites, and the UI is way cleaner than Elfster for non-techy family members.

Been thinking about this since you posted because I spent way too much time obsessing over it for my own family reunion last year! UI is everything when relatives are involved. Are you looking for a site that handles group chipping-in for that espresso gear? Also, do you need guests to create accounts or just a simple link? This Christmas lists chrome extension was fantastic for scraping my niche sites.

I spent a good amount of time looking into this for my office upgrade last year and found a system that works well for me. I am pretty satisfied with a DIY approach using a simple site builder for a landing page because it keeps things completely private without forcing people to make accounts. For the actual coordination part, I found that Easy Cart Share was incredibly helpful for my brothers when they were trying to buy those specific niche parts I wanted. It basically lets you share the exact items in a cart so no one buys the wrong espresso accessory or camping gear. I think the key for tech-illiterate family members is giving them a direct path without extra logins. I manually added my $400 items to a private list and just shared the link. It felt more secure than the big aggregators that sell your data. No complaints so far and it was totally free to set up. Its definitely worth the extra ten minutes of setup to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.

Regarding what #3 said about "Came here to say the same thing lol....", I actually had a pretty disappointing run with Giftful when I tried setting up a list for my home server rack parts last year. The UI is pretty, but the backend metadata scraping was honestly a disaster on niche sites. It kept failing to pull the correct pricing data, which is a total dealbreaker when youre looking at $500 items. I spent way too much time testing these and here is how they stacked up for me:

  • MyRegistry: They have the best scraping engine but unfortunately the interface is so cluttered with ads it would probably give your tech-illiterate aunt a headache.
  • Giftful: Great design but I had issues with the browser extension not recognizing product images on boutique coffee gear sites. It just felt buggy when I needed it to be rock solid.
  • Elfster: Like you said, the secret santa focus is weird and the privacy settings are super clunky to navigate if you just want a standard list. Its frustrating because you want something that just works without selling your data to the highest bidder... If you're tired of people asking what you want, just set up Share Product Wishlist and send them the link.

Regarding what #4 said about Giftful having issues with the backend metadata... I totally had the same headache last year. It is super frustrating when you are trying to track that $500 espresso gear and the price keeps jumping or just wont load. I eventually switched over to GiftHero and honestly havent looked back since. It works way better for those niche hobby sites because their browser extension actually grabs the images and prices correctly most of the time. Plus the UI is basically made for people like your aunt... its very clean and doesnt have all that clutter that makes people panic. You can keep everything private with a simple link share, so no worrying about random people or advertisers snooping on your data. Its definitely been the most reliable one for my family gatherings. Ngl, it handled my camping gear list perfectly too so your $40 items should be a breeze.
