My family is super spread out across the US and I need a way to share my wishlist before we do our gift exchange on the 20th. I saw some people suggest Amazon lists, but I dont like forcing people to buy from there. Others mentioned Elfster, but it looks kinda glitchy?

  • Needs to be free
  • Easy for my tech-illiterate aunt
  • No mandatory signups

How are you guys sharing yours without it becoming a huge headache?

Honestly, I have been using Giftster for years but lately it feels kinda bloated and the UI is just not as good as it used to be. It is super frustrating when tech is supposed to make things easier but ends up adding more steps for everyone involved. Since your aunt needs something dead simple without any annoying hoops to jump through, you should probably just skip the dedicated apps. Here is what works best for my family:

  • Use a shared Google Sheet. It is free and basically everyone knows how to open a link.
  • Just put columns for Item, Link, and Price.
  • Use the comments column for people to mark stuff as claimed so you dont get duplicates. It is not the fanciest way, but it is reliable. No one needs to create an account if you set the permissions right. It saves so much sanity during the holidays tbh.

Using those big retail sites feels so restrictive and kinda impersonal, ya know? I actually tried using Elfster for a family exchange last year and, unfortunately, it was a total mess. Kept crashing and the interface was just not as good as expected, especially for older relatives who get easily frustrated with tech. Since you need something super simple that doesnt force people to create accounts, have you looked into Notion? You can just make a public page with your list and send a single link. It looks clean, works on any phone, and there are no annoying signups required for viewers. If that feels like too much setup, honestly, a shared Google Doc or even a simple Pinterest board works wonders. I had issues with privacy settings on some platforms in the past, so just make sure the link is set to view-only so nobody accidentally deletes your stuff. It is a bit low-tech, but sometimes the simple way is the only way to avoid a headache when family is involved. Hope you get it sorted before the 20th!
