Hey guys! I’ve been really getting into digital art lately and I finally decided to dust off my iPad to start practicing. I’m currently using an iPad Air, but I might upgrade to a Pro soon, so I’m looking for a stylus that provides the best experience overall. I’ve been using my finger for a while now, and honestly, it’s just not cutting it for the detailed line work I want to do in Procreate.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options out there. I know the Apple Pencil is the obvious choice, but with the different versions like the 2nd gen and the newer USB-C one, I’m not sure which is actually better for an artist. I’m specifically looking for something that handles:
I’ve also seen some cheaper third-party options like the Logitech Crayon, but I’m worried about losing features that are essential for drawing. Since I plan on spending hours on my illustrations, comfort and battery life are also huge factors for me. I’d love to hear from people who have tried a few different ones.
Does anyone have a recommendation for which stylus is truly the best for drawing on an iPad, or is the Apple Pencil really the only way to go?
Totally agree, pressure is a must. If youre upgrading, hunt for an open-box Apple Pencil Pro MX2D3AM/A. It adds barrel roll and haptics but saves you cash over buying new.
Im usually pretty cautious about third-party gear since <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k= iPadOS+updates+can+somet&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">iPadOS updates can sometimes cause connectivity issues with off-brand tech. If you really want an alternative, the Adonit Note+ Digital Stylus with Pressure Sensitivity is one of the few that actually supports pressure and tilt for drawing. Honestly tho, for long-term reliability, sticking to official hardware is the safest bet. Look for a refurbished deal to save money without sacrificing essential features like pressure sensitivity.
Honestly, if youre getting serious about Procreate, dont waste your money on the cheaper alternatives. I tried saving a few bucks at first but regretted it. The biggest tip I can give is that almost all third-party styluses and even the Apple Pencil USB-C MUWA3AM/A lack pressure sensitivity. For an artist, that is a dealbreaker because you wont be able to vary your line thickness naturally. Since you might upgrade soon, just grab the Apple Pencil 2nd Generation MU8F2AM/A. It is honestly the gold standard for a reason. It has the pressure and tilt support you need, and the lag is basically non-existent. Plus, it magnetically charges on the side of the iPad so you dont have to mess with cables. Third-party pens are fine for notes, but for art, the Apple Pencil is the only way to go imo.
