So Ive been an Intel guy basically forever mostly because of quicksync and how stable it felt but I'm finally looking to jump ship to AMD for my next build. My current i9 rig is just choking on these 6K BRAW files from my new Blackmagic and the render times are honestly getting pathetic. I do heavy color grading in Resolve and some occasional After Effects stuff and everyone keeps telling me the multicore performance on the Ryzen 9 stuff is where its at now.
I got about 900 bucks set aside just for the processor and maybe the board since I'm near a Microcenter in Houston and want to get this built before my October wedding season kicks off. I was looking at the 7950X because of the core count but then I saw some stuff about the 3D V-cache models and now Im just confused if those are just for gamers or if they actually help with scrub speed in the timeline? Is it worth going for the Threadripper instead if I can find a deal or is that just overkill for a single-seat studio? Which AMD chip is actually the sweet spot for professional editing right now without burning a hole in my pocket...
> Which AMD chip is the sweet spot... Just saw this. Grab the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-Core 4.7GHz bundle at Microcenter. It's a solid value for Resolve. Lmk if you need board recs!
Building on the earlier suggestion, I've tried many rigs and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core 32-Thread is definitely the sweet spot. The cache on the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16-Core 128MB L3 Cache is great for gamers but Resolve needs those higher raw clocks. Threadripper is basically overkill for a single-seat studio, ngl. Grab a ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WiFi Motherboard and you'll be golden for wedding season.
Unfortunately, those 3D cache chips are not as good as expected for actual work. I had issues with lower clock speeds really hurting my export times compared to the standard X series. Honestly, just stick with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core 4.5GHz. It is the best bet for 6K BRAW. Grab a MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WiFi board too, should fit your budget fine.
