So my little girl is turning two in late August and honestly I’m already getting texts from my sisters and my mother-in-law asking what she wants. It's stressful because we live in a small apartment in Chicago and we really don't have room for more big plastic toys that make noise... I’ve been looking at things like Amazon Wish List but it feels so limited because I want to include stuff from local toy boutiques or even just things like a zoo membership. I also checked out Elfster but it feels way too focused on secret santa exchanges and the interface is kind of cluttered for my 70-year-old dad to navigate without calling me ten times.
I really need something that is:
I saw some people talking about MyRegistry but I read some reviews saying the browser extension is buggy and doesn't always pull the right price. GiftHero was another one that popped up but I'm not sure if it sends too many emails? I really want to avoid spamming my family. Is there anything else out there that's clean and minimalist? I'm trying to stay organized but every time I start a spreadsheet I realize I can't easily share that with people and have them update it in real time. Does anyone have a go-to for this kind of thing that actually works for toddlers specifically?
I totally get the apartment struggle. We are in a tight spot in the city too, and last year for my sons second birthday, I spent way too much time analyzing the UX and backend of different registry sites. I ended up trying Giftster because I heard it handles external links way better than Amazon. I think it uses a pretty lightweight scraping tool for the URLs, though not sure if it always grabs every thumbnail perfectly if the shop has weird metadata... but generally I was very satisfied with the uptime and speed. My father in law is basically a luddite, but he managed to click the reserve button without calling me once, which was a huge win. Not sure if it was just luck or the interface being that clean, but we were happy with the results. I recall it having a specific field for notes where I put his current shoe size. IIRC it also allows for custom items like museum memberships that dont have a direct buy link. Someone told me the notification system is pretty quiet too, so you dont have to worry about spamming people. No complaints from my tech-averse mother in law either, which is the ultimate test honestly. TL;DR: Giftster worked well for us. Its minimalist, handles links from local shops easily, and is simple enough for the grandparents to use without a manual.
