I'm looking to upgrade my PS5 Pro's storage and need recommendations for a reliable SSD. What are the best options available right now? I'm particularly interested in speed, durability, and whether they come with a heatsink. Any insights on pricing and performance after formatting for PS5 would be greatly appreciated!
The Samsung 990 Pro leads in performance, followed by WD Black SN850X and Crucial T500. While I had the Samsung, I'd choose a cheaper option for 4TB. However, I sold mine with my PS5 since the PS5 Pro's 2TB is sufficient. If I need extra storage later, I'd get another 1TB Samsung 990 Pro.
The Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD is officially licensed by Sony and achieved a 6,459 MB/s reading on the PS5's built-in SSD read speed test. Can't go wrong with something that's actually Sony-approved. A bit more expensive than generic options but the peace of mind is worth it for me.
WD_Black SN850X.
How to easily replace PS5 Pro SSD?
Regarding what #9 said about the Seagate Game Drive being officially licensed... yeah, I used to think that peace of mind was worth the premium too. Unfortunately, I had issues with that exact drive after about eight months of heavy use. It started throwing read errors during the Ratchet and Clank rift transitions which was super annoying. If you're looking for something outside the usual Samsung or WD circle, here's what I've tested on my bench:
SN850X is recommended.
For PS5 PRO storage, you need at least 5000 MB/s. Popular compatible SSDs include WD_Black SN850X, Samsung 990 Pro, and Crucial P5 Plus.
I recommend getting at least a 4TB SSD, though 8TB would be ideal. Since you've chosen the premium console version, it's worth matching it with high-capacity storage to maximize its capabilities. The Pro model deserves pro-level components for the best gaming experience.
