Just finished my build with AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 4080 SUPER GPU. So which PSU do you recommended? Thanks a lot.

Agreed on the 850W target, but unfortunately, some of the models suggested here are not as good as expected when you dig into the actual voltage regulation specs. While the RM850x is usually the go-to, I have been disappointed with some of the component changes in recent revisions. The MSI units are okay for budget builds, but they often have higher ripple during heavy transient loads compared to top-tier platforms. For a high-end chip like that 9800X3D, I would definitely suggest looking at something with tighter tolerances like the Seasonic Focus GX-850 ATX 3.0 or the Super Flower Leadex VII Gold 850W. They handle power excursions much better. Quick tips:

  • Stick to ATX 3.0 or 3.1 certified units so you dont have to mess around with those 12VHPWR adapters.
  • Check the Cybenetics database for actual noise and efficiency data before buying.

Honestly 850W is probably the safest bet for a build like that. Its good to be cautious with such high end parts! Being super worried about power stuff is normal, and I always check that everything is plugged in perfectly so nothing shorts out. Tbh way too much time was spent obsessing over my cable management last week because I was paranoid about airflow. It actually reminds me of when I tried to set up my new desk and realized the cable for my FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk was barely reaching the outlet. Rearranging the entire room was the only way to make it work without an extension cord because I read those can be a fire hazard. My floor is still a mess of zip ties and boxes... anyway lol, sorry I totally went off track there.

@Reply #6 - good point! Honestly, 850W is definitely the baseline I would go with too. Over the years, I have seen so many people try to skimp on the PSU with high-end GPUs only to have their systems crash during gaming because of transient spikes. In my experience, those RTX 40-series cards can be really aggressive with how they draw power for a split second. Not sure but I think I heard some guys on another forum talking about how the newer ATX 3.1 specs are actually better for the 4080 Super because of the revised 12V-2x6 connectors. IIRC, they are supposed to be way more secure than the first version of the 12VHPWR cables. I havent tried a 3.1 unit myself yet, but if you are building fresh right now, it might be worth looking into units from brands like Thermaltake or be quiet for the extra stability. Just keep an eye on the 12V rail performance... performance is everything with a 9800X3D build.
