Is 16GB of RAM still enough for gaming PCs in 2025?

I've been running 16GB for years and considering an upgrade. Many newer games recommend 16GB minimum, with some suggesting 32GB for optimal performance. With background apps, browsers, and game sizes increasing, I'm wondering if 16GB is now the bare minimum rather than sufficient. What's your experience with modern titles?

Jumping in here because honestly, 16GB is definitely starting to feel like the budget tier for 2025. Madman is spot on about the multitasking, and Amelia is right that your current specs matter most before buying. Tbh, if you play anything like Alan Wake 2 or Escape from Tarkov, you'll see massive improvements in stability with 32GB. Tarkov in particular is notorious for memory leaks and just eating up whatever you give it. Since you want to be cost-conscious, you dont need the flashiest RGB sticks. Here are two solid options depending on your build:

I’ve been thinking about your question and honestly, it really depends on what else you have under the hood - what kind of CPU and motherboard are you currently using? It’s hard to say if the upgrade is worth the cash without knowing if you’re on DDR4 or DDR5, you know? RAM is one of those things where you don't need it until you *really* need it. Here are two quick tips for a budget-friendly move:
- Watch your 1% low framerates in demanding titles like The Last of Us Part I or Cyberpunk 2077 - if you see massive frame drops but your average FPS is fine, that's usually a memory bottleneck.
- Check if you have open slots to just add a matching Crucial RAM 16GB Kit rather than buying a whole new 32GB set to save some money. Basically, 16GB is the "functional" minimum now, but for the price of a couple of pizzas, moving to 32GB takes a lot of the headache away... especially if you like to leave Chrome or Discord open while you play.

I upgraded from 16GB to 32GB last year and honestly noticed a difference immediately. Modern titles like Starfield and Flight Simulator would stutter occasionally on 16GB, especially with Chrome tabs open. With 32GB, everything runs butter smooth even with Discord, Spotify, and multiple browser tabs in the background. If you're a multitasker at all, I'd say 16GB is definitely the new minimum.
