What is the best GPU for high-refresh 1440p gaming?

I'm finally looking to upgrade my rig for a new 165Hz 1440p monitor I got on sale last month. I've been looking at the RTX 4070 Super since everyone says it's the gold standard right now, but then I saw some reviews saying the 7900 GRE is actually better value because of the extra VRAM. I'm kinda stuck because I want to play Cyberpunk with decent frames but also need high FPS for Apex Legends. I've got about $650 to spend and I'm buying parts here in the US later this week. Is the 12GB on the Nvidia card actually gonna be an issue in a couple years? Just trying to figure out which one actually hits those high refresh rates more consistently...

To add to the point above: Unfortunately, the 12GB VRAM on the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is actually quite disappointing for 1440p longevity. I had issues with frame pacing in memory-heavy titles, which wasnt as good as expected. A more practical, cost-effective solution is the PowerColor Hellhound AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB because it offers more VRAM overhead for consistent high-refresh gaming.

Actually been crunching the numbers on this and you might want to be cautious with your power supply choice if you go for the GRE. While the Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB is a beast for the price, its power spikes are way higher than the Nvidia card. If you're running an older unit, I'd suggest checking that first. The 12GB on the Super is fine for Apex, but for Cyberpunk with high-res textures, you're gonna be riding the limit soon tbh. Quick things to watch:

  • Memory OC: Driver updates let you overclock the GRE's VRAM now, which helps with 1% lows at 1440p.
  • Case space: Make sure your case fits the ASRock Steel Legend Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB because it's massive. Just make sure your cooling is solid if you go AMD... they run a bit toastier tho.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I've found that while the VRAM debate is huge, the actual engineering of the card matters just as much if you want it to last more than a couple years. I have tried many GPUs over the years and honestly, cheaping out on the specific model cooler is usually a mistake. If you're chasing that 165Hz target, you need a card that wont thermal throttle after an hour of heavy load.

  • For Nvidia, the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is basically the standard for reliability. In my experience, their cooling solution is over-engineered for this chip, which means it stays silent and boosts higher than the cheaper dual-fan cards.
  • If you prefer the AMD route for the VRAM cushion, the Gigabyte Gaming OC Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB is a solid pick. I've used their Gaming OC line in several builds and the triple-fan setup handles those power spikes much better than the smaller cards. 12GB is definitely enough for Apex, but for Cyberpunk with high-res textures, it's getting close to the limit. If you plan on keeping this card for 4 or 5 years, that 16GB on the GRE gives you a lot more peace of mind tho... let me know if you need help checking your PSU specs to make sure these fit.

Honestly, you are looking at the two best cards for this price point right now! I have been testing a lot of 1440p setups lately and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is absolutely fantastic for titles like Cyberpunk. The frame generation and DLSS 3.5 are basically magic for hitting those 165Hz targets on high settings. It makes the game feel incredibly smooth and responsive! When we look at raw value and longevity though, I love the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6. Having that extra 4GB of VRAM is amazing for peace of mind because some modern titles are already creeping past 10GB at 1440p. For Apex Legends, the 7900 GRE is a beast because it has such high raw rasterization power. You will easily max out your refresh rate there without any issues. If you care about ray tracing and software features, Nvidia is the way to go. If you want the best frames per dollar and dont mind skipping the fancy lighting, AMD is the clear winner here. I personally went with the 7900 GRE for my latest build because the overclocking headroom is just insane! Its a blast to tweak and the performance per watt is incredible for the price. Either way, you are going to have a stellar experience with that new monitor!

^ This. Also, you really gotta watch out for the cooling solution and power delivery on these higher-end cards. It is easy to get blinded by the VRAM debate, but I have seen plenty of cards fail or stutter because of poor thermal pads or mediocre VRM cooling. If you want this rig to stay stable for years without crashing mid-session, you need to be careful about the actual build quality. Just curious tho, what is the exact wattage and model of your PSU right now? Also, are you okay with a massive three-fan card or do you have space constraints in your case? TL;DR: Specs are great for marketing but dont ignore thermal reliability and power headroom if you want a card that actually lasts.
