Hey everyone! I am finally looking to upgrade my workstation for 2024 because my current setup is starting to crawl. I have been editing more 4K content lately, specifically 10-bit 4:2:2 files from my Sony A7S III, and my old GTX 1660 is just not cutting it anymore. The timeline lag is becoming a huge headache, especially when I start adding color grades or noise reduction in DaVinci Resolve.
I have been doing some research, but the market feels a bit overwhelming right now. I am trying to decide if I should go for something like the RTX 4070 Ti Super for that extra 16GB of VRAM or if it is worth jumping all the way up to an RTX 4080 Super. I also use Premiere Pro occasionally, so I need something that plays nice with both pieces of software. My main priority is getting smooth real-time playback without having to create proxies for every single project. I am also curious if anyone has tried the latest AMD cards like the RX 7900 XTX for this kind of work, or if NVIDIA is still the undisputed king for encoding.
Does anyone have experience with the latest 2024 GPU releases for high-res video work? I am really curious if the VRAM jump is as important as people say for 4K timelines. Which specific card do you think offers the best balance of performance and price for a professional 4K editing workflow this year?

For ur situation, i'd get NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB:
- amazing value
- 16GB VRAM
Honestly, it's basically essential for those Sony 10-bit files!! it's a total beast.

In my experience, I saved a ton of cash by grabbing the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB. it's basically the value king... ur gonna love that 16GB VRAM, seriously!!

Quick question - what CPU are you running? Honestly, even with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super, those 10-bit 4:2:2 files usually rely on ur processor for decoding, not just the GPU!!

I think we need to look at the reliability and power overhead before deciding based on VRAM specs alone. Those 10-bit files place a specific load on the hardware that goes beyond just the GPU core. To provide better data, i have a couple of technical questions:
- What is the exact wattage and efficiency rating of your current power supply?
- Are you prioritizing peak render speeds or are you looking for thermal stability for long-term uptime during heavy export weeks? Knowing these details is fairly critical because jumping to the higher-tier cards often requires an overhaul of the cooling and power delivery to prevent system instability under full load. If the PSU isnt up to the task, the extra VRAM wont matter much if the rig just crashes during a render.
