What is the best graphics card thingy I should get if I want to edit professional 4K video this year? I'm honestly so lost because I've been using a laptop for years and it literally sounds like it's going to explode whenever I try to color grade my footage. I'm trying to build a real PC now because I just got a big contract for a wedding videography project in June so I have some money to spend but I'm terrified of buying the wrong part. My budget for the card is maybe around $900 or $1000 but I could go higher if it actually makes a big difference.
I keep seeing people talk about VRAM and numbers like 4070 or 4080 and I have no idea what those mean for my actual editing speed. Is more gigabytes better? I'm using Premiere Pro and some After Effects for titles. Right now it takes like three hours just to export a 10 minute clip and the preview window is always laggy and choppy which makes it impossible to see what I'm doing. Is there a specific brand that works better or are they all the same? Sorry if this is such a basic question I just dont want to waste a grand on something that doesnt even work with my software...
tbh you dont always need the top tier card to get professional results. If you want to be smart with your money, grabbing something like the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Super Gaming OC 12GB GDDR6X is a very safe bet. It hits a sweet spot for 4K editing in Premiere without costing a fortune. Since you're coming from a laptop, the jump in performance will be massive regardless. I'd really suggest sticking to Nvidia for those specific apps because their encoders are just more reliable for exports. Also, just a tip... make sure you install the Studio Drivers. They're way more stable for work than the gaming ones. Saving some of your $1000 budget now lets you buy more storage or faster RAM, which honestly helps the preview lag just as much as the GPU does. Youll do great on that wedding gig!
Saw your post! @Reply #1 - good point! but honestly you can save a ton of cash and still get amazing results! I love the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB GDDR6X because it has that crucial 16GB VRAM for way less money.
If you want zero lag in Premiere, honestly just grab the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X. I've been using it lately and I'm super satisfied with how it handles 4K stuff.
