Which Intel CPU offers the best performance for high-end gaming?

So Ive been building my own rigs since the Sandy Bridge days and usually I just grab whatever the top-tier i9 is and call it a day but things feel way more complicated right now than they used to be. I am planning a fresh build for next month because my old 10900k is finally starting to struggle with some of the newer titles and I am trying to decide where the sweet spot is for high-end gaming specifically.

I was originally set on the 14900k but then I started seeing all these reports about stability issues and chips degrading or crashing in Unreal Engine 5 games. It is making me really paranoid about spending that much money on a flagship that might need me to go into the BIOS and start messing with power limits or undervolting just to keep it from crashing. I have always been comfortable overclocking but I really just want something that works out of the box this time around without having to worry about PL1/PL2 settings just to get through a session of Cyberpunk.

Im located in the UK and my budget for the CPU is roughly £500 to £600 which covers basically anything in the consumer range but I dont want to waste money on thermal headroom I cant use. I have already picked up a high-end Z790 board and a 360mm AIO so the cooling should be fine but the 14th gen just seems to run so incredibly hot compared to what I am used to.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • Solid 4K performance since I am pairing this with a 4090.
  • Great 1% lows because I hate stuttering more than anything.
  • Something that wont be obsolete in two years but also isnt a literal space heater.
  • Needs to be available for a build I am starting in about three weeks.

Is the i7-14700k actually the better buy for a gamer even if budget isnt the main concern? I keep seeing people say the extra E-cores on the i9 dont really do much for gaming and the clock speed difference seems pretty negligible when youre playing at higher resolutions anyway. Then again part of me feels like if I am going all out I should just get the best one available even if it is a bit of a headache to tune. Does the i9 offer any real world advantage for high-end gaming that I am missing or is it just for people doing heavy productivity work these days...

Man you are gonna have such an amazing time with your new build! Honestly I think the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-core 5.6GHz LGA 1700 is the absolute king for what you need. I have been using one recently and the stability is just fantastic compared to the horror stories I have seen about the i9 lately. Since you are playing at 4K with that beefy 4090 the CPU isnt even the bottleneck anyway so saving some cash and heat is a total win. Those extra e-cores really help with those 1% lows so everything feels super smooth while gaming! Plus your 360mm AIO will actually be able to keep up without sounding like a jet engine lol. Its basically all the gaming power of the flagship without the stress of crashing in UE5. You are gonna love it!
