finally getting around to building my first real home lab server instead of just running everything off an old laptop that gets way too hot lol. i'm really stoked to get this thing running in my tiny apartment by next weekend since i finally have some time off work. the main goal is just a solid media server for plex plus some home assistant stuff and maybe a few docker containers for storage. i've narrowed it down to two choices but i'm stuck. i'm looking at the i3-12100 which is super cheap like under 100 bucks usually or maybe stretching my budget an extra 50-60 bucks for the i5-12400.

i know the i5 has more cores which sounds better for longevity but honestly the i3 seems like it has that quicksync magic for transcoding anyway so maybe the extra cores are just a waste of money for a budget build? my total budget for the cpu is $150 max because i still need to buy some big hard drives and those are getting pricey fast. i want something that wont spike my electric bill too much either since i plan on leaving it on 24/7. which one should i go for if i want the best bang for my buck for a starter server... or is there some other hidden gem i'm missing?

How many concurrent 4k transcodes are you planning? I'm quite satisfied with the Intel Core i5-12500 6-Core 4.6GHz LGA1700 because its UHD 770 graphics provide dual media engines for heavy plex loads.

tbh just grab the Intel Core i3-12100 4-Core 3.3GHz LGA1700. in my experience building in tight spaces, heat is the real hardware killer. i once cooked a motherboard because i went for a hotter chip i didnt need. the i3 stays cool and stable for years. spend that extra 50 bucks on a decent surge protector or a backup drive instead.

^ This. Also, summarizing what everyone's said: it's basically the i3 for efficiency vs the i5 for better transcoding. I'm super satisfied with my low-power build because it saves so much money for those expensive drives and doesnt get loud.

  • How many people are actually gonna stream at once?
  • Are your docker plans just light stuff or something heavy? Knowing that would really help us out.

honestly, for a starter lab, the i3 is more than enough. i've used plenty of these in small apartment builds over the years where heat and power are big factors. the Intel Core i3-12100 4-Core 3.3GHz 12MB Cache LGA1700 is a beast for plex because that quicksync engine is basically identical to the higher end chips. you arent gonna see better transcoding from the i5... just more overhead for other stuff. if you plan on running dozens of docker containers plus some heavy vm work, sure, grab the Intel Core i5-12400 6-Core 2.5GHz 18MB Cache LGA1700. but for just home assistant and media? stick to the i3.

  • quicksync handles multiple 4k streams like a champ
  • idle power draw is basically nothing on these 12th gen chips
  • saves you 50 bucks for those Western Digital Red Plus 8TB NAS Internal Hard Drive units you mentioned dont overthink the core count too much for a basic server. in my experience, most people bottleneck on ram or drive speed long before they max out a modern i3.
