Ive been cutting video on my old 3700X build for like forever and it was fine for 1080p and even some light 4K stuff but man I just started this project with a bunch of 10-bit 4:2:2 footage from a Sony A7SIII and my timeline is just crawling. Its actually painful to watch the preview skipping frames every two seconds even when I drop the resolution to 1/4 in Premiere. I know my way around a PC and I've got 64GB of RAM so I dont think thats the bottleneck but the CPU is just pegged at 100% and getting way hotter than I like. I was looking at the 7950X or maybe the 9950X if the price is right but I heard the 3D cache chips arent actually better for rendering and might even be slower for exports? I've got about 600 or 700 bucks set aside for just the processor upgrade and I really need to get this rig snappy before a big freelance gig kicks off in three weeks. Im mostly worried about export times and getting a smooth scrub through the timeline without having to wait for proxies to generate all day because my local storage is already getting full as it is. Which AMD chip is the actual sweet spot right now for heavy 4K editing and multi-track work...

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would be really careful about jumping to a 9950X without checking your motherboard first. I nearly broke my last rig because I didnt realize the power draw was so high... are you planning on buying a new board and RAM too? If youre staying on AM4, consider:
- AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core 32-Thread Processor Make sure you have a solid cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 Dual-Tower CPU Cooler too.

Honestly, I had a pretty rough time trying to solve this exact problem last month. I picked up the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core 32-Thread thinking it would fix everything for my 4K projects, but it was kind of a letdown in terms of ease of use. It gets so incredibly hot... like I was seeing 95 degrees constantly and I thought my PC was gonna melt. It made me really nervous so I ended up spending way more than I wanted on a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black Dual-Tower Air Cooler just to keep the temps from hitting the ceiling. Unfortunately, even with all those cores, that specific 10-bit 4:2:2 footage from the A7SIII is just a nightmare for AMD chips because they dont have the specialized hardware decoding that Intel has. I was really disappointed when my timeline still felt sluggish. If youre dead set on AMD, here is what I found:
- The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core 32-Thread is basically your only option for those $600, but be ready for the heat.
- You absolutely have to factor in a new AM5 motherboard like the ASUS ROG Strix B650-A Gaming WiFi and DDR5 RAM which adds up fast.
- I had to go into the BIOS and turn on Eco Mode just to feel safe, which kind of defeats the purpose of buying the fastest chip. It just wasnt as plug-and-play as I hoped. I spent more time troubleshooting than actually editing that first week. Its snappy once its dialed in, but man, it was a stressful upgrade for a freelancer.

Look, Ive been cutting high-bitrate footage for years and you're spot on about the 3D cache chips. They're great for gaming but the lower clock speeds and thermal limits actually make them worse for heavy rendering and sustained exports. In my experience, you need raw core counts and high frequencies to brute force that Sony 10-bit 4:2:2 footage since AMD lacks the specific hardware decoding that Intel uses. I'd definitely go with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-Core 32-Thread Processor. It's a proven, stable workhorse and fits right in your budget. While the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 16-Core 32-Thread Processor is newer, the 7950X is the reliable sweet spot for a deadline-heavy workflow. Just make sure your cooling is top-tier because these chips are designed to run hot when they're pinned. Tbh, it'll feel like a night and day difference compared to your old 3700X.
