Hello, I'm planning to buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D but heard it's recommended to use a secure frame and thermal paste, or maybe a thermal pad like the Thermalright Heilos. What are your recommendations and why? I don't mind spending extra; I only care about 100% optimization. Thank you for your help!

Noctura NT-H2.

@Ashley Also bought this, I've tested this thermal compound on various setups: NH-D14 with FX-8350 and AIO coolers with Ryzen 9 3900X, all under heavy BOINC workloads. While lacking precise measurements, it outperforms budget options and matches premium pastes like Hydronaut, with thinner consistency than NT-H1.

I've been using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut with my 9800X3D and seeing excellent results. It's not the cheapest option, but the thermal conductivity is top-notch, and I'm getting 3-4°C better temps compared to the stock paste that came with my cooler. Worth the investment for these X3D chips that can run hot.

I use the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for my 7800X3D.

For the 9800X3D, I'd strongly recommend Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut - I'm seeing excellent results with 3-4°C better temps compared to the stock paste. These X3D chips can run hot, so investing in premium thermal paste is worth it. Kryonaut Extreme sits at the pinnacle for maximum cooling performance, with exceptionally high thermal conductivity at 14.2 W/mK. The non-conductive formula also means no short-circuit risks.

> @Reply #13 - good point! Kryonaut is definitely the king for raw numbers when you first apply it, but ive noticed it tends to degrade or pump out if you leave it for a year under heavy gaming loads. Tbh the 9800X3D has that stacked V-Cache which makes the heat density pretty wild. I used to chase every single degree with those thin, high-performance pastes until my old rig started thermal throttling after eight months of daily use. When I pulled the block off, the paste had basically migrated to the edges, leaving the center bare. It was a mess. Now i prioritize viscosity and long-term stability. Ive been using Arctic MX-6 Thermal Paste lately because its thicker and handles those thermal cycles much better without drying out or separating. It might be a tiny bit warmer than the boutique stuff on day one, but in two years itll still be performing exactly the same. If you want that set it and forget it reliability for a chip this expensive, its a solid play. Also, definitely grab a Thermalright AM5 Secure Frame to ensure even pressure across the IHS. It makes a real difference on these LGA sockets for keeping the spread consistent over time.

I use the Corsair XTM50. https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Compound-Ultra-Low-Impedance-applicator/dp/B07V3GTMCS?------123456890?5422-20

Hello! For optimizing your 9800X3D, both premium thermal paste and a PTM7950 pad (like Thermalright's) are excellent choices. PTM7950 offers superb performance and ease of use. If using paste, ensure good coverage. A secure frame can help ensure even mounting pressure for either.
