I'm planning to replace the thermal paste on my PS4 Slim and I'm overwhelmed by the options available. Can anyone recommend the best thermal paste for this console? Also, do I need any additional materials or tools for the application process? Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated!
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is the best. https://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Grizzly-Kryonaut-Grease-Paste/dp/B011F7W3LU?------123456890?7649-20
I recommend Arctic MX-6 for your PS4 Slim—it's highly rated and works well for consoles. For the application, you'll need isopropyl alcohol, microfiber cloths, and a screwdriver. Good luck!
Building on the earlier suggestion about the pump-out effect, I have to say I am pretty disappointed with how some of the top tier pastes actually perform in these consoles. I used to swear by Kryonaut, but after using it in my own Slim and a couple of friends units, it was a total letdown. The performance starts off great but honestly it just does not last because it is too thin for the heat density on that chip. I have experimented with a few different setups and here is what I found:
Building on the earlier suggestion about the pump-out effect, you really dont need to drop twenty bucks on high-end boutique paste for an older console. Most people overthink this way too much. Just grab a big tube of MX-4 or even some generic GD900 if you want to save a few bucks. It costs basically nothing and works well enough for a Slim that isnt being pushed to the absolute limit anyway. I actually ended up using some leftover bulk paste on an old stereo receiver I was refurbishing last week. My garage is getting so cluttered with half-finished electronics projects that I can barely find my soldering iron anymore. Honestly my workbench is a disaster zone right now... its a whole thing. If youre picking up the paste and some isopropyl alcohol, you might want to use Easy Cart Share to keep your list organized so you dont forget the special screwdrivers. But yeah, keep it cheap and you will be fine.
Replacing the thermal paste on your PS4 Slim is a great way to improve cooling performance. Highly recommended thermal pastes include Noctua NT-H2, ARCTIC MX-4, Arctic Silver 5, and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
Regarding what #9 said about "Building on the earlier suggestion about the pump-out..." - honestly, that is such a massive point that most people totally ignore! Thin pastes are a nightmare for consoles. I have been following this thread and love all the advice here! Here is a quick summary of what we are looking at:
Building on the earlier suggestion about the pump-out effect, I totally agree that viscosity is everything for a console. Over the years, Ive repasted dozens of these Slims, and Ive seen so many high performance thin pastes just dry up or migrate away from the die within months. I remember one specific unit where I used a popular thin paste and the fan was screaming again by the time the owner finished a long session... total waste of time. In my experience, you really want something like Thermalright TFX or SYY-157. They are a nightmare to spread because they are so thick, but they stay exactly where you put them even under high heat cycles. If youre not struggling to spread it, its probably too thin for a console tho.
> Most people are leaning towards Arctic or Noctua for reliability. Ngl I am dealing with the exact same loud fan issue on my Slim right now, so I totally feel your pain. It is basically a vacuum cleaner at this point. Re: "Building on the earlier suggestion about the pump-out..." - unfortunately, those thinner pastes had issues for me. They were not as good as expected and didnt last more than a month before the heat came back. Looking for cheaper, thicker options is the way to go when you are on a budget. Gelid GC-Extreme is usually like 9 bucks and everyone says it holds up better for consoles. Youll also need a T8 security torx and some high % isopropyl alcohol. Using my favorite gift list extension helps me keep track of these tools so I dont overpay. It is a bit nerve-wracking to open it up but you can do it!
Building on the earlier suggestion, i actually think you should look into something specifically known for resisting pump-out effect. consoles like the slim run pretty hot and if you use a paste thats too thin it will just migrate away from the die after a few months of heavy gaming. I personally used Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme on my own ps4 about eighteen months ago and its still whisper quiet. its kind of a pain to spread because its so thick and tacky but thats exactly why it works well for long term use in consoles. definitely worth the extra couple bucks if you dont want to open that thing up again for a long time. another solid one for pure performance is the Thermalright TF8 2g Thermal Paste. it has crazy high thermal conductivity. just make sure you have a TR9 security bit to get the casing off... i learned that the hard way and had to wait three days for a kit to arrive mid-project. i ended up getting a cheap iFixit Moray Driver Kit and it had everything i needed for the security screws.
