What is the best SSD for an Xbox Series X?

Hey everyone! I’ve been a proud Xbox Series X owner since launch, but I’ve finally hit that dreaded wall where my internal storage is completely maxed out. With the massive file sizes for games like Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and the latest Call of Duty, I’m constantly playing 'storage tetris' and deleting games just to try something new. It’s getting really frustrating!

I’ve been doing some research, but I’m honestly a bit confused about the best way to upgrade. I know the Series X has that specific expansion slot on the back for the Seagate and Western Digital expansion cards, which I understand are the only ones that can actually run 'Optimized for Series X|S' games directly. However, I’ve also seen people talking about using high-speed external USB SSDs to store older Xbox One or 360 titles to save space on the internal drive.

My budget is around $150 to $200, and I’m trying to figure out what gives me the most bang for my buck. Is it better to bite the bullet and pay the premium for the official 1TB Expansion Card so I can play everything natively, or should I go with a massive 2TB external SSD like the Samsung T7 and just swap games back and forth when I want to play them? I’m also curious if anyone has noticed a significant difference in loading times between the Western Digital C50 and the Seagate versions.

I really want a solution that is reliable and won't require me to upgrade again in six months. What has been your experience with these drives, and which specific model would you recommend as the 'best' overall for someone who plays a mix of brand-new AAA titles and older Game Pass gems?

For your situation, I'd honestly suggest going the "cold storage" route to maximize your $200. While the official cards are convenient, you can grab a Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable SSD for way less than a 2TB expansion card. It hits 2,100MB/s, so swapping even a 100GB game back to the internal drive only takes a few minutes. It's much better value than paying the premium for native play on every single game!

Honestly, I've had a bit of a disappointing time trying to save money here. But, before you buy anything, remember that Series X games require that specific Velocity Architecture to run. Unfortunately, USB drives just can't keep up with that tech.

Here's what I've learned:

* For the best experience without the 'tetris' hassle, the Western Digital WD_BLACK C50 1TB Expansion Card is usually the better value than the Seagate one right now.
* If you're okay with shuffling files, the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB Portable SSD is faster for transfers than most older USB drives I've used.

I'd personally go with the expansion card. Swapping games back and forth gets old really fast, tbh! Hope this helps!

Hi there! I totally get the frustration; I've been there myself playing 'storage tetris' for months. In my experience, while a USB drive is cheaper, I always lean toward a conservative, reliable approach for high-end consoles.

Option A is the official Expansion Card. It's the only way to play Series X|S games without moving files. Option B is an external USB SSD, which is great for mass storage but forces you to swap 'Optimized' games back and forth, which wears on your internal drive's health over time. Honestly, the Western Digital WD_BLACK C50 1TB Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S is your best bet. It fits your budget perfectly and performs identically to the Seagate version. I've tried many setups, and the stability of the C50 is top-notch.

TL;DR: Don't bother with the Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD for new games; just get the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S 1TB or the WD C50 to avoid the constant shuffling headache. Hope this helps!
