Hey everyone, I’m finally looking to level up my sim racing setup and could really use some advice from those who have already made the jump to an ultrawide. Right now, I’m stuck using a standard 27-inch 16:9 monitor, and it just doesn't provide the field of view I need. I find myself constantly missing the apex on tight corners because I can't see far enough to the sides, and checking my mirrors is a total nightmare without using a button to look around.
I’ve been eyeing a few options, specifically debating between a 34-inch 21:9 and a massive 49-inch 32:9 super ultrawide. While the 49-inch seems like the ultimate choice for immersion, I'm worried about the desk real estate it consumes and whether my GPU can consistently push those extra pixels at high frame rates. I definitely want something with at least a 144Hz refresh rate and a decent curve—maybe 1000R or 1500R—to really wrap the cockpit around my vision.
Are OLED panels like the Odyssey G9 worth the premium for racing, or should I stick to a high-end IPS to avoid potential burn-in from static HUD elements? If you’re a fellow sim racer, which specific ultrawide model would you recommend for the best balance of immersion and performance?
so i've been sim racing for like seven years now and honestly I feel your pain cuz that 27-inch tunnel vision is just the worst for hitting apexes. I started there, moved to triples, and then eventually went the super ultrawide route. To be realy honest tho, I had a bit of a rough time early on with the Samsung Odyssey G9 G95T 49-Inch... it was great for FOV but the flickering was such a headache before the firmware updates finally fixed things. If you're worried about your GPU and burn-in, here is basically the breakdown from my experience: * The Middle Ground: A 34-inch like the LG 34GN850-B 34 Inch UltraGear Nano IPS Gaming Monitor is a massive upgrade over 16:9, but you'll still be squinting for that side mirror. It's way easier on your hardware tho.
* The Immersion King: You highkey gotta go 32:9 for racing. Seriously. The Samsung 49-Inch Odyssey G9 Series LC49G95TSSNXZA with that 1000R curve literally wraps around you. It’s basically like wearing a helmet.
* The OLED Risk: I tried the Samsung 49-Inch Odyssey OLED G9 G95SC AI Powered Gaming Monitor and the colors are insane, but unfortunately I started seeing ghosting of the iRacing speedo after a few months of heavy endurance racing. Static HUDs are a killer for OLED. Honestly, if you want the best balance without the burn-in anxiety, I'd suggest sticking to a high-end VA panel for now. Just make sure your GPU (like a 3080 or better) can handle it cuz pushing 5120x1440 at 144Hz is no joke. If you go 49-inch, you wont ever go back to anything else... just make sure your desk is big enough lol. Gl!
i went through this last year and honestly snagged the Gigabyte G34WQC A-SA 34-inch Gaming Monitor for like $350. it fixed my FOV issues way cheaper than those huge OLEDs lol
