I’m a streamer and video editor looking for a laptop that can handle creative work. Should I go for something like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 with its OLED display, or are there better options for multitasking and rendering?

Been thinking about your setup for a bit and honestly, after doing this for 15 years, Ive learned that raw power is nothing without stability. I remember back in 2018 I had this beast of a machine that would crush benchmarks but would randomly thermal throttle and drop frames during a live stream. It was a nightmare. Quick question tho, what software are you usually running while you stream? Are we talking heavy OBS setups with multiple 4K inputs or just some light gameplay and editing in Premiere? If youre looking for something that wont let you down when things get intense:

  • Ive been super satisfied with the Razer Blade 16 2024 with RTX 4080. The build quality is basically the closest you can get to a MacBook on the Windows side and the cooling handles long render sessions way better than the thinner stuff.
  • Another sleeper pick is the HP ZBook Studio G10. Its a proper workstation so the drivers are way more stable for creative apps compared to gaming laptops. Both are expensive but having a machine that actually finishes a render at 3am without crashing is worth every penny imo. No complaints since I made the switch to higher-end cooling setups.

Ok so I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect balance for my editing setup. Honestly, the biggest thing I learned is that specs on paper dont mean anything if the laptop cant stay cool during a 4-hour stream or a long render session. I used to have a thinner laptop that would basically turn into a space heater and crash right when I was about to export a project. It was so frustrating to lose progress like that (at least thats what happened to me). Here are two things I always look for now:

  • Look for vapor chamber cooling or at least extra heat pipes so it doesnt throttle when things get intense
  • Make sure the manufacturer has stable drivers, like the studio drivers from nvidia, to prevent crashes in your software I ended up going with the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i after my last one died because of heat issues. Its a bit bulkier but the reliability is worth it for peace of mind. Their really consistent under load tho.

I've been using the MacBook Pro 16" with M3 Pro for the past year and it's been incredible for my video editing and graphic design work. The battery life is amazing, and it handles 4K footage without breaking a sweat. That said, "best" depends on your budget and specific needs. For Windows users, the Dell XPS 17 or ASUS ProArt Studiobook are solid alternatives with great displays and plenty of power.
