I'm in the process of building a new rig centered around the new released AMD Ryzen 7 9700X, and I'm stumped on which GPU to pair with it. My use case includes gaming at 1440p and some light video editing. What's your take on the best GPU to complement this processor? Thanks in advance for your help!

Get the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER.

Had a moment to think about this more. I am very satisfied with how that specific CPU handles 1440p throughput, but I need to ask a clarifying question first. Are you aiming for high refresh rates like 165Hz or is a stable 60Hz enough for your gaming needs? I have spent a lot of time testing different architectures in my current setup and found some interesting data points:

  • My previous card from the green team had higher power draw but great software integration.
  • The one I got recently from the red team runs much cooler during long gaming sessions.
  • Architecture efficiency seems to matter more than raw VRAM for the specific light editing tasks I handle. Knowing which software you use for your video work would also help. Some suites are optimized for specific hardware encoders, and I found that made a huge difference in my own workflow.

For 1440p gaming, just get RTX 4070 Ti SUPER or 7900GRE.

My 4070 handles all games at max 1440p settings. Even Alan Wake 2 with ultra, path tracing, DLSS, DLDSR, and frame gen runs 60-80 fps in demanding areas. Higher-tier GPUs will perform even better.

7900 GRE is also recommended.
