Is a truly universal docking station, compatible with all laptop brands and models, a realistic possibility? Given the variations in connectors (USB-C, USB 3.0), power requirements (80W, 100W), and functionalities (DisplayLink technology, dual HD, 4K), is a one-size-fits-all solution feasible? Do "universal" docking stations like those from Targus and Plugable genuinely offer seamless functionality across diverse laptops, or are there limitations? What are the key compatibility factors to consider, and what are user experiences with so-called universal docks?

Targus Universal USB-C Docking Station: Targus offers a variety of universal USB-C docking stations that are tested for compatibility with multiple platforms and operating systems. These docks allow you to connect various peripherals, including multiple monitors, through a single USB-C connection. They support features like secure Ethernet connections and enhanced audio capabilities, making them suitable for diverse work environments

^ This. Also, honestly ive been hunting for the same thing because buying those expensive $300 brand-name docks for every laptop in my house was getting ridiculous. It really is a struggle when you have a mix of old Dell stuff and a new MacBook. Basically in the same boat trying to find one thing that actually works for everything. I kinda gave up on the high-end brands and just went for a more budget setup that covers most of my bases. Been super happy with the Wavlink USB 3.0 Universal Dual Display Docking Station lately. Its not the fanciest thing on the market, but for the price I paid on sale, it handles my dual monitors without a single hiccup. Ngl, I was worried it wouldnt work with my older laptop but it basically just plugged in and worked. If you're like me and dont want to drop half a paycheck on a dock, looking at these cheaper brands is totally the way to go. No complaints so far, honestly.

A truly universal docking station is challenging due to varying laptop specs. While "universal" docks like Targus and Plugable aim for broad compatibility, limitations exist. Focus on USB-C with power delivery (e.g., 100W) for best chances of cross-brand compatibility, but always check specific laptop and dock requirements. User experiences vary, so research before buying.
