Hi everyone! I am finally planning a top-tier PC upgrade for 2024 and could use some advice from the community. I have already managed to pick up an RTX 4090, and now I am looking for the perfect AMD CPU to pair with it for a high-end 4K gaming experience.
I have been doing a lot of reading, and it seems like a toss-up between a few options on the AM5 platform. Most people point toward the Ryzen 7 7800X3D because of that massive 3D V-Cache, which is supposedly the gold standard for gaming right now. However, I am also considering the Ryzen 9 7950X3D since this is meant to be a no-compromise build. I know that at 4K resolution, the GPU does most of the heavy lifting, but I really want to ensure my 1% lows are solid and that I have zero bottlenecks in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or the latest simulation games.
I am a bit confused about whether the extra cores on the Ryzen 9 series actually provide any benefit for strictly gaming at such high resolutions, or if the 7800X3D is still the undisputed champion for pure performance. If you were building a high-end 4K rig today, which specific AMD processor would you pick to get the absolute smoothest frame rates and best long-term value?

yo, I feel u on this one. Honestly, I went through this exact same dilemma when I snagged my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 last year. You want the absolute best, right? So you look at the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D and think 16 cores must be better than 8. But seriously, for a pure gaming rig, the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the absolute play. In my experience, here is why I suggest sticking with the 8-core chip:
- The 7800X3D has all its cores on one single chiplet with that sweet 3D V-Cache.
- The 7950X3D is kinda wierd because only 8 of its 16 cores actually have the extra cache.
- Windows sometimes gets confused and puts your game on the slow cores without the cache, which can cause micro-stutters. I actually tested both in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K. While the average FPS is almost identical because the GPU is doing the heavy lifting, the 7800X3D just felt smoother... like, those 1% lows were rock solid. Plus, it runs way cooler and you dont have to mess with Xbox Game Bar settings to make sure ur games are using the right cores. Anyway, if you arent doing heavy 4K video editing or 3D rendering, those extra cores on the Ryzen 9 are basically just sitting there doing nothing while you game. But honestly, I'm so glad I stayed cautious and did more research. For your situation, I would suggest going with the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It's been the perfect choice for my 4K gaming and I am super satisfied with how it handles everything. Here is the practical breakdown:
- Cost: It’s significantly cheaper than the Ryzen 9, and at 4K, you won't see any difference in frame rates.
- Reliability: The single chiplet design means you wont have those weird scheduling bugs that some beginners struggle with on the 7950X3D.

So basically, at 4K ur CPU just needs to feed the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 fast enough. Background info: that 3D V-Cache helps with those frame dips you're worried about.
- AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D: One chiplet means no weird scheduling issues. Its super reliable.
- AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D: More cores but might need extra software to run games on the right cores. I would suggest the 7800X3D cuz its safer and probably better for gaming stability. gl!
