Which portable USB-C hubs offer the best port selection for travel?

Hey everyone! I’m planning a few trips for the second half of the year, and I’m quickly realizing my current setup is a bit of a mess. My ultrabook only has two USB-C ports, which is great for keeping things lightweight but a total nightmare for connectivity when I’m on the road. I’ve been scouring Amazon and various tech blogs, but it feels like most hubs either miss one crucial port or are basically heavy bricks that take up way too much space in my carry-on.

I'm really looking for that 'Goldilocks' hub that balances portability with a truly useful port selection. Ideally, I need something with a reliable HDMI port that can handle 4K at 60Hz for plugging into hotel TVs, along with at least two USB-A ports for my older thumb drives and peripherals. A built-in SD card reader is a huge plus for offloading travel photos at the end of the day. I’m also a bit concerned about heat management—I’ve had cheaper hubs get surprisingly hot during pass-through charging.

Since I’ll be working from cramped cafes and tiny hotel desks, it needs to be compact. Does anyone have a tried-and-true recommendation for a portable hub that doesn't sacrifice performance for its size? What's your go-to USB-C hub that has actually survived the rigors of frequent travel?

In my experience, finding a hub that doesnt melt is lowkey a struggle. While the Satechi USB-C On-the-Go Multiport Adapter is decent, I highkey recommend the Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) because it actually handles 4K@60Hz perfectly and stays cool during pass-through charging. TL;DR: Get the Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1)—its basically the goldilocks hub for travel stuff!!

tbh i went through this exact mess last year. i compared the CalDigit SOHO Dock USB-C Gen2 10Gbps against the OWC USB-C Travel Dock E and some cheaper ones. The CalDigit is the winner for heat management imo—it’s built like a tank. ngl the OWC is okay but lacks the same thermal efficiency. It’s definitely safer for ur gear if u need 4K 60Hz and pass-through charging without things getting dangerously hot... gl!

Ugh, I feel your pain so much. Honestly, the reliability issue is what keeps me up at night when I am prepping for a trip. I remember being in this cramped little workspace in London last summer and the hub I had—which was supposedly top tier—just decided to start thermal throttling. It got so hot I could barely touch it, and then my second monitor just went black in the middle of a client call. It is seriously the most frustrating thing because you spend all this money on a nice ultrabook and then you are at the mercy of a tiny plastic or metal box that might just quit on you. I have a drawer full of dead hubs that promised the world and basically just became expensive paperweights after three months of heavy travel. Reliability is everything when you are on the road, but man, it feels like a total crapshoot sometimes.

Similar situation here! * Generic: Unfortunately overheated.
* Belkin: Way more reliable. Honestly, just go with Belkin; they're basically the best value for travel since they actually last.
