Which online tools are easiest for organizing a family gift exchange?

Im starting to panic because I got nominated to run the family secret santa this year and I have zero clue what Im doing. We have about 22 people this time and everyone is scattered across the country like we have people in California, New York, and my youngest cousin is actually in London for a study abroad thing so shipping is going to be a whole ordeal. We decided on a $50 limit which is easy enough but the actual organization part is where I am stuck.

I spent way too much time yesterday looking at Elfster and DrawNames because they kept popping up in my search results but I am still so confused. I read that Elfster is the most popular one but then I saw some reviews saying the interface is super cluttered with ads and suggested gifts that just make it hard to find the actual wishlist and I just know my grandma in Florida is going to get lost on that site and end up buying something random from an ad instead. Then I looked at DrawNames and it seemed a bit cleaner but I couldnt tell if it lets me set up those exclusion lists? Like I really need to make sure spouses dont draw each other and that parents dont draw their own kids because that defeats the whole purpose of the exchange. Its just so much pressure to get it right.

I also looked at a few others like Secret Santa Organizer but I'm worried about emails ending up in spam folders and then people thinking I just forgot to include them. I need to have this all sorted and names drawn by the first week of November so the international shipping doesnt cost more than the actual gift. Does anyone know which of these is actually the simplest for people who aren't great with tech? I just want something that works and doesn't require everyone to make a whole new social media profile just to see a name or something...

Ive been running my familys exchange for about six years now and I have tried basically every site out there. Honestly, just go with DrawNames. I know you were worried about exclusions but it definitely has that feature. You can set it up so spouses never pull each others names, which is a lifesaver. In my experience, DrawNames is much better than Elfster for these reasons:

  • It is way less cluttered. Elfster is basically just a giant ad board now which confuses my older relatives too.
  • The exclusion tool is super straightforward to set up during the initial group creation.
  • People dont have to create a full social media style profile just to see their person.
  • It has a built-in anonymous chat if someone needs to ask their person a question about shipping to London. Any automated tool might hit a spam filter, so just text the group the second you hit the draw button so they know to check their junk folders right away.

To add to the point above: just saw this thread and honestly most of these apps are kinda disappointing nowadays. I used Elfster for years but unfortunately it got way too cluttered with junk ads like you said. It makes the whole process feel cheap and confusing for the older folks. DrawNames is okay for the exclusions part but I still had issues with people getting frustrated by the layout... it's just not as intuitive as it used to be. Basically the thread so far suggests:

  • Avoid Elfster if you have non-techy relatives like your grandma.
  • DrawNames is solid for the technical logic like exclusions but can be pushy with their own gift ideas.
  • Using shareable links is way safer than relying on emails to avoid the spam folder nightmare. Shipping to London is gonna be your biggest headache tho. That $50 limit disappears fast if you arent careful. I found Share Product Wishlist last year and it actually works with almost any store, which is nice.

To add to the point above: Ive spent years tinkering with these systems and the spam folder issue is real. One year I had a whole branch of the family miss out because their ISP blocked the auto-emails... total disaster.

  • I now strictly use sites that generate shareable links.
  • My current setup lets me check who actually opened their link in a dashboard.
  • It saves me from guessing if people saw the draw or not.
