Is it rude to send a gift list to my family for Christmas? My aunt is bugging me and I need to decide tonight.

Im torn between sending a group doc link or just telling my mom so she can leak it. Which is best? Everything is under 50 dollars but I really need specific apartment stuff...

Honestly, its not rude if they are asking. I was worried about looking greedy too, but I ended up using Share Product Wishlist last year and I am really satisfied with the results. It works well because people see exactly what you need for the apartment without guessing. My family was happy they didnt waste money on stuff I wouldnt use. Just keep the prices low like you mentioned.

Regarding what #2 said about "Unfortunately, group docs get messy fast.Use a handy..."

  • I actually think letting your mom leak it is way riskier based on my own experience. Last year I tried the whole whisper-down-the-lane approach and it was a total disaster for my apartment setup.
  • I ended up with two of the same budget mouse because people didnt coordinate.
  • Two cousins bought me the exact same desk lamp.
  • My family spent way more than they needed to because they couldnt see the specific cheap items I actually wanted. It felt way more awkward having to explain why I was returning stuff than it would have been to just be upfront. Now I just send a simple, direct list with no pressure. People usually appreciate the clarity so they dont waste their hard-earned cash on duplicates. Keeping it under 50 bucks is the real trick to making sure it feels like a helpful guide rather than a demand.

Unfortunately, group docs get messy fast.

  • Use a handy holiday tool for budget gear
  • It keeps gifts under $50 Sadly, leaks always cause confusion.

Jumping in here... I went through this exact thing when I was first setting up my home office gear. I tried a few different ways to get the word out. One year I used a basic shared doc and another year I tried a dedicated registry site like Elfster or MyRegistry. Honestly, the dedicated list brands felt way more natural and less like a demand compared to a messy document. When I used the doc, my older relatives got super confused and ended up buying the wrong stuff anyway. The registry style worked because it had pictures and direct links. My experience was that as long as the prices are fair, people actually prefer the clarity. Last time I tried to let my sister leak what I wanted, it was a total mess. She forgot the specific brands I liked for my tech accessories and I ended up with some generic stuff that didnt even fit my setup. The dedicated list brands just handle the coordination better so you dont end up with duplicates... basically makes it foolproof for everyone involved.
