I'm starting to use my iPad for daily writing tasks and really need a solid keyboard. I specifically want:

  • Long battery life
  • Easy multi-device switching
  • Portability

I'm overwhelmed by the choices between Apple and third-party brands. Which external keyboard is honestly the best option for an iPad?

Look, ive been using iPads as my main mobile workstations since the original iPad Pro came out, and i have gone through way too many keyboards trying to find the perfect one. While the official Apple stuff is nice, if you want multi-device switching and long battery life, you really have to look at Logitech. Honestly, the Logitech MX Keys Mini Minimalist Wireless Illuminated Keyboard is the gold standard right now. I use it every day and here is why it wins. First, the multi-device switching is seamless. You can pair it with three different devices (like your iPad, laptop, and phone) and jump between them with a single tap. Apple's own Magic Keyboard cant even do that. In terms of battery, its incredible. If you keep the backlighting off, it lasts for months on a single charge. It also has a much better typing feel than those flimsy folding keyboards people often buy for portability. It is slim enough to toss in a backpack but heavy enough that it doesnt slide around while you are typing fast. Another great option if you are on a budget is the Logitech K380s Pebble Keys 2 Bluetooth Keyboard. It is a bit more clicky and runs on AAA batteries that last for two years, which is basically the definition of long battery life. But for a serious writer, the MX Keys Mini is the one you want... trust me on this one.

Tbh, the Satechi Slim X1 Bluetooth Backlit Keyboard is the sleekest choice for travel, but the Keychron K3 Ultra-slim Wireless Mechanical Keyboard is far better for long writing sessions. Both switch devices effortlessly.

Wait, before I dive into the specs, what is your preference for actuation force and key travel? If you're on a tight budget, the iClever BK10 Bluetooth Keyboard Multi Device is a great way to save money while getting multi-device switching. I usually see them on sale, which is a big plus. I just need to know if you prefer mechanical switches or membrane before I pull up more data for you.
