Hey everyone! I've been using my iPad Pro as my main device for a while now, but I'm really struggling to find the perfect typing setup. I currently switch between an older iPad Air and the new Pro, so I'm looking for something versatile that might work across different models if possible.
Right now, I'm using a cheap Bluetooth keyboard I found on Amazon, but the latency is driving me crazy and the keys feel super mushy. I’ve looked into the Apple Magic Keyboard, but that price tag is pretty steep, and it only works for specific models. I’ve also heard people rave about the Logitech K380 for its multi-device switching, but I'm worried it might be too bulky for my backpack when I'm heading to a coffee shop.
Here are a few things I'm specifically looking for:
I'm really trying to turn this into a legit laptop replacement for my freelance writing work, so the typing experience is everything to me. Does anyone have a favorite they swear by? In your opinion, what is the best external keyboard for any iPad model?
Just saw this thread and wanted to jump in because I went down this rabbit hole last year. I was doing a ton of writing at cafes, and honestly, the mushy keys on those cheap travel boards were killing my speed and vibe. I eventually tried a low-profile mechanical setup and it totally changed how I use my <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k= iPad+for+work&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">iPad for work. I ended up grabbing the NuPhy Air60 V2 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard and it is basically the gold standard for me now. Its super slim so it fits in my bag easily, but the tactile switches give that satisfying feedback that makes typing feel way more precise. If you want something a bit more technical and slim but on a budget, the Keychron K3 Ultra-slim Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Version 2 is also a killer choice. Both have rock-solid Bluetooth and let you swap between your Air and Pro with a quick key combo. Trust me, once you feel that mechanical click, you wont ever go back to membrane keys.
Coming back to this, I totally agree that sticking with reliable brands is the way to go for connection stability. If you want a premium feel without the Apple price, the Satechi Slim X1 Bluetooth Backlit Keyboard is a safer bet for multi-device switching. For something even more portable, the Microsoft Designer Compact Keyboard Bluetooth is super slim and wont weigh you down... honestly tho, just double check the battery specs so you dont get stranded mid-work.
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.

Quick reply while I have a sec. @Reply #3 - good point about the battery specs! We have covered quite a bit of ground here, ranging from those high-end mechanical boards to the ultra-slim travel options. The general consensus seems to be that sticking with established brands is the only way to escape that lag you are dealing with on the cheap stuff. I would suggest being careful with the ultra-slim models though, as they sometimes sacrifice key travel for portability, which can lead to finger fatigue during long writing sessions. I have seen some people DIY their own carrying cases to protect thinner boards, which is something you might want to consider if you go that route. Before you make a final decision, I have a couple of questions. What is your actual budget for this? Also, are you looking for a dedicated Mac layout with the Command keys in the right spots, or are you okay with a universal layout that might have Windows markings?
tbh I think you should skip the cheap stuff and look at the Logitech MX Keys Mini Minimalist Wireless Illuminated Keyboard. I use it for my freelance gigs and the tactile feedback is way better than the K380. Its super slim for travel and handles the multi-device switching perfectly between my iPad and phone. Definitely feels like a legit laptop replacement without being bulky.
