Hey everyone! I’m finally putting together my new build centered around an RTX 4080, but I’m getting a bit overwhelmed by the power supply options. I’ll be pairing the card with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and I’m torn between sticking with a high-quality 850W unit or just jumping to 1000W for extra headroom. I definitely want something ATX 3.0 compliant so I can use a native 12VHPWR cable without those clunky adapters. My budget is around $180, and I’m really hoping for something quiet under load. Does anyone have specific recommendations for a reliable PSU that has been rock solid for your 40-series builds?

Late to the party but I went through this last year. Honestly, I was sooo stressed about choosing the right wattage because I kept hearing about power spikes on the newer cards. I'm a pretty cautious builder, so even though people told me 850W was fine for my 4080, I just couldn't shake the feeling that I wanted more headroom for future upgrades. I realy didnt want to have to swap the PSU again in three years if I get a 5090 or something lol.

I ended up going with a 1000W unit and I've been super satisfied with the results. It's basically silent because the fan barely ever has to work hard. If you're looking for alternatives to the ones mentioned above, here are a couple that fit your budget and are rock solid:

* Corsair RM1000e (2023) Fully Modular Low-Noise ATX Power Supply - This is what I have. It's usually around $160 and has been dead silent for me.
* be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 1000W ATX 3.0 Fully Modular Power Supply - Another great option if you're worried about noise, these guys literally specialize in silence.

Looking back, I'm happy I went with 1000W. Sure, 850W is probably enough for a 7800X3D, but having that extra cushion makes me feel way safer. Plus, the native cables make the build look so much cleaner without those wierd adapters. It's definitely worth the peace of mind. Anyway, good luck with the build, the 4080 is a beast! peace

Ok so if youre prioritizing safety for that 4080, I would suggest the Corsair RM1000x Shift 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular ATX 3.0. It's usually under $180 and the side connectors help you be careful with 12VHPWR bends, which is crucial for reliability. Ngl, the 1000W headroom handles transient spikes perfectly and stays silent. Basically peace of mind in a box. gl!

I saw this earlier but just getting around to posting... I've always been a total DIY nerd when it comes to cable management, so I've tried a few different units to see what actually fits best in a tight case. Since you're doing the install yourself, I think the physical flexibility of the cables is SO important for that 12VHPWR plug. Here are a couple I've worked with recently that really stand out for a self-service build: * Seasonic Vertex GX-1000: I used this in a 4080 build last month and the cable quality is just next level. They aren't those stiff, plastic ribbons, so bending them safely away from the side panel glass was way easier than other brands. It’s super quiet too, basically silent under a normal gaming load.
* Montech Titan Gold 1000W: Well actually, I was surprised by this one. It’s usually cheaper than the big names but uses great internals (CWT platform). It’s a bit more compact, which makes the DIY process a lot less stressful when you're trying to shove extra cables into the basement of the case. I usually lean toward 1000W just so the fan stays in zero-RPM mode longer... it really helps keep the noise down during lighter tasks.

In my experience, 850W is plenty since the 7800X3D is sooo efficient. Honestly, i'd go with the MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 850W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Power Supply cuz it’s been rock solid and super quiet in my builds (at least thats what worked for me). You dont really need 1000W, so basically save ur money!! gl!

Check out the PSU Tier List on Cultists Network—its basically the bible for tech geeks. I used to be obsessed with 1000W units until i realized my 4080 rig barely pulls 500W under load. Grab the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 850W 80+ Gold Full Modular ATX 3.0 for like $130. Super quiet and saves u cash vs the 1000W version. Lesson learned: high-tier 850W is plenty.
