Hey everyone! I’m currently putting together a mid-range build with a Ryzen 5 5600 and an RTX 4060, but I’m really stuck on picking a power supply. I’ve seen some super cheap options online, but I’m terrified of getting something that might fry my components. I’m looking for something reliable in the 600W-650W range that won't break the bank—ideally under $75. Efficiency is a plus, but safety and quiet operation are my main priorities. I've looked at some PSU tier lists, but they're honestly a bit overwhelming to navigate. Does anyone have recommendations for a solid, budget-friendly PSU that actually holds up? What are you guys using for similar mid-tier setups?

I totally get it cuz I unfortunately had issues with a cheap PSU that basically fried my last motherboard... it was reallyyy a nightmare. Highkey recommend the Corsair CX650 650 Watt 80 Plus Bronze since it's reliable and sooo quiet. Honestly, just dont risk ur parts on anything less!
Just sharing my experience:

Sooo, I went through this exact same headache last year when building a 4060 rig for a friend. When you're looking at budget units, you gotta understand the internal topology first. Most super cheap PSUs use "group regulation," which is basically old tech that struggles to keep voltages stable when a modern GPU draws power. You reallyyy want a unit with "DC-to-DC" conversion and LLC resonant converters.
This matters cuz if the 12V rail (powering your GPU) fluctuates too much, it can cause system instability or even fry the VRMs on your motherboard. I learned this the hard way years ago when a "budget" unit literally popped and took out my SSD. Total nightmare!!
In my experience building mid-range rigs lately, I've had great results with the Thermaltake Toughpower GX2 80+ Gold 600W SL-PS-TPD-0600NNFAGU-2. I usually find it for about $60 to $65. Its 80+ Gold, which means better efficiency and usually better internal components than the average Bronze unit. Another solid pick I've used is the EVGA 600 GD, 80+ GOLD 600W, 100-GD-0600-V1. It's non-modular, so you have to tuck away some extra "stuff" and cables, but it's reliable and usually sits right at the 70 dollar mark. I've found that spending that extra 10 bucks now is the best insurance for your hardware. Good luck with the build!
Respectfully, I'd consider another option:
- MSI MAG A650BN 650W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply
It's basically the best Tier C unit under $65; quiet with solid DC-to-DC topology.
I'd actually suggest a different approach.
- Any big future upgrades?
- Frequent power surges there?
Safety is literally everything, so I gotta know those details first honestly...
