My logic was just get the cheapest B650 I can find like the Gigabyte Gaming X AX because I spent all my cash on the 7800X3D but then I saw reviews saying the VRMs get crazy hot. Is it worth stepping up to the MSI Tomahawk? I need to stay under 150 quid for this build if possible...

Late to the party but Ive spent way too much time testing these AM5 boards lately. You really gotta be careful with the ultra-budget stuff... I once had a cheap board that would throttle my clocks because the VRM sensors were hitting 105C during a render, which was a total nightmare to troubleshoot. For your 150 budget, I would suggest these:

  • ASRock B650 LiveMixer AMD AM5 DDR5 ATX: Honestly, the orange graffiti look is kinda wild, but the specs are legit. The 14+2+1 power phases are total overkill for a 7800X3D, which is exactly what you want for longevity. It stays icy cold.
  • MSI PRO B650-S WIFI ATX AM5: Solid bet if you need WiFi. Just make sure to flash the BIOS immediately tho, because earlier versions had weird memory training bugs that made boot times feel like an eternity. Basically, you dont need a Tomahawk, but dont go below these specs or youll regret it later.

Im satisfied with how the ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi DDR5 performs for this specific setup. Its 8+2+1 power phase delivery is technically more than enough for the 7800X3D because the chip draws surprisingly little power during real-world gaming. Everything works well and stays cool. You could also look at the ASRock B650 PG Lightning DDR5 which fits your budget perfectly and offers very stable VRM temperatures.

Dude, I totally get the struggle! Spending all your cash on that beastly chip is so worth it tho because the 7800X3D is literally the fastest gaming CPU on the planet right now!! Youre gonna love the frame rates you get with that thing. Honestly, the VRM panic is kinda overblown for the X3D chips since they are actually super efficient and dont pull massive power like the high-end Intel stuff. If you want to stay under that 150 mark while still getting amazing performance, you should definitely look at the ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi AM5 DDR5 Micro-ATX. I used this board for my brothers build and it is absolute fire for the price! It stays way cooler than people expect and the bios is actually pretty easy to navigate. If you really want a full ATX board, the Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX AM5 is another fantastic choice that usually fits right in your budget. I personally think the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX is a beast but it usually creeps closer to 180 or 200 quid unless its on a mega sale. Tbh youre better off saving that extra cash for a better GPU or more storage. Just make sure whatever you pick has BIOS flashback because you might need to update it for the 7000 series x3d support right out of the box... but most of them come ready now anyway. Seriously, its gonna be an amazing setup!!
