So my current board just basically died on me after a simple BIOS update and I am beyond frustrated because I have a huge project deadline by Friday and need this rig back up like yesterday. I have been building my own systems for over a decade but these newer Z790 boards feel so hit or miss lately with the coil whine and weird memory training issues. I am looking for a high-end replacement for my i9-14900K and 4090 build because my old board was causing some weird VRM throttling that I just couldnt fix no matter what.
Here is what I am looking for:
- Budget around $450 to $550 max
- Need at least 4 M.2 slots for all my NVMe drives
- Must have solid overclocking support for DDR5
- Good rear IO because I run a lot of peripherals for streaming
- Located in NJ so I am probably gonna hit up the Microcenter in Paterson to grab it today
I was looking at the Maximus Hero or maybe one of the Aorus Master boards but I have heard mixed things about the BIOS stability lately. Does anyone have a Z790 that is actually stable and doesnt have that annoying high-pitched coil whine under load? I really need to get this ordered or picked up in the next few hours so I can get back to work...

To add to the point above: if you are worried about that annoying coil whine and want a bios that actually makes sense, i have been super satisfied with the MSI MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi DDR5 ATX Motherboard. I've been building for 15 years and honestly, MSI usually has the most stable memory training for DDR5 right now. It has 5 M.2 slots which beats your requirement, and the VRM cooling is massive so your 14900K wont throttle like on your old board. Tbh, the Asus Hero is kinda overpriced for what you get, and those Strix boards have been a bit finicky with high speed ram lately. The Carbon just works. It handles my high speed kits without breaking a sweat and the rear IO has more USB ports than i know what to do with for my streaming gear. No high pitched noise either, which is a huge plus for me since my pc is right on my desk... definitely check if they have it in stock today.

Man, I feel that pain. Im usually super paranoid about BIOS updates because of exactly what happened to you. Tried a few brands before settling on the Gigabyte Z790 AORUS MASTER X E-ATX. Honestly, it has been running great for months. The build quality is solid and those 5 M.2 slots are lifesavers for my workflow. Picking this was mostly about the VRMs being absolute overkill, which means zero throttling when the 14900K pulls massive power during long renders. Plus, it hasn't given me any annoying coil whine. Since you're near the Paterson Microcenter, they usually have these in stock today. TL;DR: Get the Gigabyte Z790 AORUS MASTER X E-ATX. Its reliable for high-end work because:
- Overbuilt VRMs prevent throttling
- 5 M.2 slots for storage
- Superior memory stability
