So I finally managed to get my hands on a PS5 after wanting one for like two years and I set it up in my bedroom but honestly it looks kinda terrible. I am using this old TV my parents gave me when I moved out and everything just looks blurry and the colors are all washed out. My friend came over and said I need a 4K monitor because that is what the console is made for but honestly I have no idea what that even means in terms of shopping for one. I went to Best Buy the other day and just stood in the aisle looking at all the boxes and it was so overwhelming. There are all these numbers like 144Hz and HDMI 2.1 and something called HDR? I felt so stupid just standing there.

I have about $600 saved up maybe $700 if I really stretch it and I want to get something that makes the games look as good as they do in the trailers. I play mostly single player stuff like God of War and Spider-Man so I just want it to look pretty. I dont really care about being super fast for shooting games or anything like that. Someone told me I need a specific plug to get the best out of the PS5 but I thought all HDMI cables were the same? I am so sorry if this is a dumb question but I just dont want to get ripped off.

I saw a few things online that people mentioned but I dont know if they actually matter for what I want:

  • Refresh rate numbers like 60 vs 144
  • Something called VRR
  • Screen size because I dont want it to be too big for my desk

Anyway I am looking to buy this sometime in the next three weeks before my vacation starts. Is there like a specific brand that works better with Sony or does it not matter? I keep seeing stuff about OLED too but that sounds really expensive and I heard they can get permanent shadows on the screen if you leave them on too long. If anyone could just tell me what to look for without using too many tech words it would be great. I just want to make sure I dont buy something that wont even work with the console or is a waste of money because I am totally lost...

Look at the Gigabyte M28U 28" 4K 144Hz. It meets every PS5 requirement for under $600:

  • HDMI 2.1
  • 4K resolution
  • VRR support Its a solid choice for single-player games.

@Reply #2 - good point! Most monitors in this price bracket fail to deliver true HDR. I've been very satisfied with the LG 27GP95R-B 27 inch UltraGear UHD 144Hz as its reliable and honestly handles PS5 features properly without any issues. Quick tip: Use the original HDMI cable from the box so you dont have compatibility issues. TL;DR: Ensure the specs list HDMI 2.1 to get the full 120Hz performance on PS5.

I saw this yesterday and wanted to chime in because I've been burned by bad monitor specs before. Honestly, standing in those aisles is a nightmare because half the stuff on the boxes is marketing fluff. Like HDR... most monitors under $800 have fake HDR that just makes the screen look orange and weird. I bought a cheap one last year and had to return it because the colors were so off I couldn't even see the details in the shadows during God of War. It was a total mess. If you want something that works perfectly with the PS5 without a headache, you might want to consider the Sony INZONE M9 27 inch 4K 144Hz Gaming Monitor. Since Sony makes it, it has this feature where the PS5 recognizes it immediately and calibrates the colors for you. Its very set it and forget it which is great if you don't want to dig through tech menus. It handles the dark scenes much better than most standard screens in your price range. Be careful with OLED though. You mentioned the shadows on the screen—thats called burn-in, and while its rarer now, I still dont trust it for long gaming sessions if you have static health bars on screen for hours. I would suggest sticking to a high-quality IPS panel like the LG 27GP950-B 27 inch UltraGear 4K UHD 144Hz. Its a very safe, reliable pick that wont give you those burn-in heart attacks. Just make sure you use the original cable that came with your PS5... its actually better than most the stuff youll find on a store shelf.
