Hey everyone! I'm planning a new build around the 9950X3D and trying to figure out the optimal RAM configuration. I know X3D chips can be more sensitive to memory settings than regular CPUs. Should I go with DDR5-6000 CL30 or push for something faster like DDR5-6400? Thanks.

Dude, don't overthink it. All that talk about ratios and timings can make your head spin. You've got a top-of-the-line CPU, so you don't want to cheap out on RAM, but you also don't need to spend a fortune on the absolute fastest sticks.

For the Ryzen 9000 series, the answer is simple: get a 32GB kit of DDR5-6000 with CL30 timings

Here's why:

  1. It's the official "sweet spot" recommended by AMD. It gives you like 95% of the performance for a fraction of the cost of the crazy-fast stuff.
  2. It just works. Buy a kit with an "AMD EXPO" logo on it, pop it in your motherboard, go into the BIOS, click the EXPO profile, and you're done. No manual tuning needed.
  3. It's great for gaming. The difference between 6000 MT/s and something insane like 8000 MT/s in actual gaming is a few frames at best, but the price difference is huge.

Brands like G.Skill (Trident Z5 Neo), Corsair (Vengeance), and Kingston (Fury Beast) are all solid choices. Just grab a 2x16GB kit of DDR5-6000 CL30 and you'll have a beast of a system for your 9950X.

tbh i have to politely disagree with the idea that there is one single 'best' answer for everyone. the 9950x3d is a beast, but the price-to-performance ratio changes depending on what you're actually doing with the rig. before you commit to the standard 6000 cl30 advice, i've got a couple questions... what's your total budget for the memory, and are you mostly gaming or doing professional productivity work? sometimes the x3d cache makes high-speed ram less impactful in games, so you might be able to save some cash there without losing real-world performance.
