so im finally pulling the trigger on a new rig this weekend since im in LA and can just drive to micro center. budget is about $3000 for the whole thing. im stuck between the i7-14700k and the i9-14900k... my logic was that the i9 is obviously the king but i keep reading about how its basically a space heater and i dont really want to go crazy with cooling. but then i feel like if im spending this much on a high end build i might regret not getting the top tier chip. i mainly do 4k gaming and some light video editing on the side so i dont know if the i9 extra cores even matter for me. what do you think is the move here?

Honestly, I'm super satisfied with the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 3.4GHz LGA1700. Since you're gaming at 4k, you're mostly GPU bound anyway so the i9 extra clock speed is basically overkill. It runs way cooler and the 20 cores are plenty for video work. Pair it with a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black Air Cooler and you'll have a silent rig without those i9 heat headaches. No complaints here, it works well.

Unfortunately, I had major cooling issues with the Intel Core i9-14900K 24-Core 6.0GHz. Just grab the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 5.6GHz because the i9 doesnt really feel worth it.

@Reply #2 - good point! honestly i agree with the i7 but i would suggest being way more cautious than just worrying about cooling... there are some major stability concerns with 14th gen voltage limits lately. make sure you update your bios for the microcode fix or you might face some nasty degradation. really keep an eye on those vcore levels just to be safe. dont want your new rig dying early.
