Building a $3k rig next week and honestly stressing about the CPU. I saw the 14900K is top tier, so I was thinking just buy that, but then read that at 4K it doesnt even matter compared to the i7.

My logic was go big but now Im worried about stability... is the i9 actually worth it?

> is the i9 actually worth it? Honestly, for 4K gaming? Not really. Ive built dozens of high-end rigs and the 14900K is a beast, sure, but the power draw and heat are massive. At 4K, your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X is doing 95% of the heavy lifting anyway. Ive benchmarked the Intel Core i9-14900K 24-Core 6.0GHz against the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 5.6GHz and the frame rate difference at 4K resolution is basically margin of error stuff, like maybe 2 or 3 fps max. The stability concerns you mentioned are very real. Ive had to tweak several i9 setups lately just to keep them from crashing in certain titles because of those high voltage profiles out of the box. The i7 is much easier to manage and cool. If you go with the i7, you can spend that extra cash on a faster drive like the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe Gen4 SSD or just keep it in your pocket. If you are sticking with Intel for this build, the i7 is the sweet spot. Just make sure you get a solid board like the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi and a beefy cooler like the Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 AIO because even the i7 gets pretty toasty under load. Dont overthink the i9 unless you are doing heavy video editing or 3D rendering all day... for just gaming, its way overkill.

^ This. Also, I unfortunately had some annoying stability issues with the i9... it was super disappointing. Its not as good as expected for 4K gaming tbh. I ended up with the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 5.6GHz and it runs way cooler. Better to spend that cash on a beefy Corsair RM1000x 1000W 80 Plus Gold power supply instead. TL;DR: i9 runs too hot; i7 is the sweet spot.
