Which SFX PSU is best for a compact ITX build?

Hey everyone! I am finally taking the plunge into the world of small form factor builds and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the power supply options available right now. I have spent the last few weeks slowly gathering parts for a build in the FormD T1, and since space is at a massive premium in that case, I know the PSU choice is going to make or break my cable management experience.

I am planning to run a Ryzen 7 7800X3D paired with an RTX 4080 Super. Given the power spikes on these newer cards, I am leaning towards something in the 750W to 850W range just to be safe. My main concern isn't just the raw wattage, though. I have heard horror stories about some SFX units having really aggressive fan curves that sound like a jet engine as soon as you start a game, or worse, persistent coil whine that drives you crazy when the PC is sitting right next to you on the desk.

Another huge factor for me is the cables. In a case this tiny, I really need cables that are flexible and easy to route around the motherboard and GPU. I have looked at the Corsair SF750 because everyone seems to swear by it, but it is an older Platinum model and I am wondering if I should be looking at newer ATX 3.0 or 3.1 compliant units like the Cooler Master V850 or the silverstone options instead. Having that dedicated 12VHPWR cable would definitely save me from using those bulky, stiff adapters that come with the GPU.

I am really looking for something that hits that sweet spot of:

  • Extremely quiet operation even during heavy gaming sessions
  • Flexible, high-quality cables that won't fight me during the build process
  • Solid efficiency and long-term reliability since I really don't want to take this tiny thing apart again

So, for those of you who have wrestled with tight ITX layouts recently, which SFX PSU would you actually recommend today? Should I stick with the tried-and-true classics or is there a newer 850W unit that has taken the crown for compact builds?

I totally agree with the point about the cables—in the T1, every millimeter counts. If you want to look outside the usual suspects, the SilverStone Extreme 850R Platinum 850W SFX is a very solid contender. It's ATX 3.0 and handles those 40-series power spikes without breaking a sweat. SilverStone has been doing SFF longer than almost anyone else, and their reliability is top-notch. It's usually a bit cheaper than the new Corsair units too, which is nice for the wallet. One thing to keep in mind for your budget: even though it has the 12VHPWR cable, you might still want a 90-degree adapter. The T1 is so narrow that the standard cable bend can be a real pain against the side panel. Honestly, spending the extra $20 on a dedicated right-angle cable will save you a massive headache during the actual build... definitely worth the peace of mind.

Honestly, I would stick with what is proven. The Corsair SF850 80 PLUS Platinum ATX 3.1 is basically the updated king for a reason. I went with it because I didnt want to risk loud fans or reliability issues with newer brands. It has those super flexible sleeved cables that are a lifesaver in a FormD T1, plus the native 12VHPWR cable means no chunky adapters. Its dead silent too.

Wait, quick question before I dive in—are you planning on getting custom cables later or sticking to the stock ones? That really changes things for the T1. If you want a solid alternative to the usual picks, the Phanteks Revolt SFX 850W Platinum is great. It's fully ATX 3.0, so you get that native 12VHPWR cable you wanted without the bulk.
