Hey everyone, I’m currently in the middle of putting together a high-end workstation for my home studio, and I’ve become a bit obsessed with making it as silent as possible. I’ve already picked out a dampened case and some ultra-quiet Noctua fans, but I’m really stuck on picking the right power supply to tie it all together. I’ve noticed that even some 'quiet' PSUs have a noticeable coil whine or a fan profile that kicks in aggressively under load, which is exactly what I want to avoid during late-night audio editing sessions.
I’m looking for something in the 750W to 850W range to power a Ryzen 9 and a solid workstation GPU. I’ve been looking at the Seasonic Prime series and some of the Be Quiet! Dark Power units, but I can’t decide if I should go completely fanless or stick with a semi-passive model that only spins up when absolutely necessary. Efficiency is also a big factor for me since higher efficiency usually means less waste heat and, consequently, less fan activity.
Does anyone here have experience with a truly 'dead silent' PSU that doesn't suffer from annoying coil whine? I’m willing to pay a bit more for high-build quality, but I’d love to hear what you guys are actually using in your quiet builds. What specific model would you recommend for a rig that needs to stay whisper-quiet even when rendering heavy files?
Quick question - what GPU are you actually using? Unfortunately, I've had bad luck with workstation cards causing "silent" PSUs to ramp up aggressively due to transient spikes... it's really annoying. Basically, you gotta check Cybenetics Lambda A++ noise ratings instead of just 80 Plus efficiency. The Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold actually has a more consistent PWM fan curve than the "premium" units i've tested lately. lmk what ur running!
Seconding that! i'm super happy with my Super Flower Leadex VI Platinum PRO 850W: - Top-tier safety
- Dead silent It works well and gives me peace of mind during long sessions.
> Does anyone here have experience with a truly 'dead silent' PSU that doesn't suffer from annoying coil whine? hey, i get it... i've been obsessed with this too! honestly, i'm still kinda new to high-end builds, but i’ve already had some bad luck. I bought the be quiet! Dark Power 13 850W 80+ Titanium thinking it’d be perfect, but unfortunately I had issues with some clicking sounds. It wasn't as good as expected for the price and was super frustrating for my audio work. Basically, to solve this, u have two paths:
1. Totally fanless: Look at the Seasonic Prime Fanless TX-700 700W 80+ Titanium. No fan means zero fan noise, but u gotta have great case airflow cuz there's no active cooling.
2. High-efficiency semi-passive: I’ve heard the Seasonic Prime TX-850 850W 80+ Titanium is technically the best for this. I actually recommend the Corsair RM850x (2021) 850W 80+ Gold. Even though it's not Titanium, the fan curve is lowkey amazing and it’s been way quieter for me than the "pro" units. Do u know your total power draw? If it's under 400W, the fan basically wont even spin. hope that helps!! 👍
So basically the consensus is that standard efficiency ratings dont guarantee silence against transient spikes. My tip? Skip the expensive fanless models and grab the Fractal Design Ion+ 2 Platinum 860W instead. It has a huge fan that stays dead silent and saves you some serious cash compared to boutique units. Works well for me! GL!
