So I'm finally trying to build my own pc after saving up for like a year but honestly looking at the parts list is making my head spin. I managed to get a rtx 3070 and an intel i5 something or other from a friend but I have no idea how to power it. Everyone says dont buy a cheap power supply or it might blow up your whole house which sounds super scary?? I'm looking for a 750w one because that's what a calculator online told me to get but there are so many brands and they all look the same to me.

I dont really understand the difference between the 80 plus gold or bronze stuff or why some are so much more expensive than others. My budget is probably around $110 for this part and I'm hoping to buy it this week from Amazon so I can finally get this thing running before the weekend. I'm worried about getting one that doesnt have the right plugs for my gpu too. Sorry if this is a really basic question but I'm just so lost with all the technical specs and numbers.

  • budget: $100-$115
  • usage: mostly gaming (valorant, cyberpunk)
  • location: US

Is there a specific 750w model that is considered the safest for someone like me who just wants it to work and not catch fire?

Saw this earlier and wanted to chime in because picking a psu is legit the scariest part of a first build. Honestly, the 80 plus ratings are mostly about how much electricity gets wasted as heat, but higher ratings like gold usually mean the company used better components that wont fail on you. You should check out the Cultists Network PSU Tier List online... it sounds super nerdy but its basically the bible for which units are safe and which are avoid at all costs hazards. If it is in Tier A or B, you are usually golden. A couple solid ones that usually fit your budget:

In my experience, you really cant go wrong with the Corsair RM750e 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular. I've used these in several builds over the years and they are rock solid for that budget.

  • gold rating ensures better voltage regulation
  • fully modular cables keep the airflow clean I once had a cheap unit pop and take out a motherboard, so spending the $100 here is basically insurance for your rig.

tbh choosing a psu is the most stressful part because it literally touches every other component in your build. if safety is your main concern, i would strongly suggest looking at the Seasonic FOCUS GX-750 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular. seasonic is basically the industry leader for reliability... theyve been around forever and actually manufacture the internals for many other big brands too. the 80 plus gold rating isnt just about your power bill, it usually means the internal components are higher quality and designed to handle the heat better. for an rtx 3070, you definitely dont want to go cheap. another very safe, methodical bet in your budget is the EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G6 80+ Gold 750W. it has great protections and a solid warranty. just be careful when you are plugging everything in and make sure those cables click all the way into the power supply and the gpu. you wont have issues with the connectors on either of these models.

Unfortunately, my previous unit failed under load and damaged my motherboard. Was really disappointing. I learned that internal circuit protections are way more critical than simple efficiency stickers for reliability.
