What B650 board is actually the best pick for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D right now? I have to get my parts ordered by tonight if I want any chance of building this over the weekend and I am honestly stuck. I have been looking at the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk because everyone says the VRMs are great but then I keep seeing people complaining about crazy long boot times even with the newer BIOS updates which sounds like a total headache. Then I looked at the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX but apparently those have some nasty coil whine issues lately and since my case is gonna be sitting right next to my head on the desk I really dont want to deal with a high pitched buzzing all day.

I have a strict $230 budget for the motherboard because the rest of the build already cost me a fortune and I live in a pretty remote area so if I have to return something it takes forever to get a replacement. I just need something reliable that wont throttle the chip.

  • Need at least three M.2 slots
  • Good WiFi is a must since I cant run a cable to my room
  • Stable BIOS

Is the ASRock Steel Legend actually a better bet like I saw on a few threads or should I just flip a coin between the MSI and Gigabyte and hope for the best? What are you guys actually using with your 7800X3D builds...

Unfortunately, board quality is a total nightmare lately. What case are you actually using tho?

Regarding what #1 said about "Definitely avoid the ones with coil whine! That..."

  • I honestly couldn't agree more. Nothing ruins a high end build faster than a buzzing sound right in your ear. I went through a whole ordeal last year with a board that screamed every time I opened a game and it was exhausting. When you're sitting right next to the thing, it becomes all you can hear. In my experience with the AM5 platform since it launched, ASRock has actually been the most consistent brand this generation for stability. I have used a bunch of different boards lately and I am currently running the ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi AM5 ATX in a build for my brother. It has been rock solid. The VRMs are total overkill for a 7800X3D, which is exactly what you want if you dont want things throttling. Those MSI boot times you mentioned? They are definitely annoying. You can usually fix it by messing with Memory Context Restore settings in the BIOS, but ASRock boards seem to just handle memory training faster out of the box. Plus, the Steel Legend gives you those three M.2 slots you need and the WiFi is snappy. If you can find a deal on the ASRock B650E Steel Legend WiFi PCIe 5.0 model, that's even better for future proofing, but the standard one is plenty for a 7800X3D. TL;DR: Grab the ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi AM5 ATX. It avoids the Gigabyte noise lottery and the MSI boot lag while hitting your $230 budget perfectly.

Definitely avoid the ones with coil whine! That buzzing is seriously the worst. The last option you mentioned is fantastic, I love how stable and fast it is! It is absolutely amazing!
