What is the absolute best Mini-ITX motherboard for a high-end gaming build right now? I'm finally downsizing to a Fractal Terra next month and I'm super hyped.

I saw the ROG Strix B760-I is popular but I've read scary stuff about coil whine on Reddit so I'm second guessing it. My budget is $250 max.

In my experience, those Asus boards are a total lottery with the inductor noise. For a Terra build where everything is exposed, I'd grab the MSI MPG B760I EDGE WIFI DDR5 LGA1700 instead. I've benchmarked it several times and the 8+1+1 power phase delivery is super stable. Plus, it fits your budget perfectly without the headache.

I spent hours obsessing over my Terra build last summer and honestly, I learned that more expensive isnt always better for SFF. I ended up trying the ASRock B760I Lightning WiFi DDR5 after being skeptical, and it is absolutely fantastic! The technical specs on this thing are kind of a sleeper hit... it has a 14+1+1 power phase design with 60A Dr.MOS that keeps things super stable even under heavy gaming loads. Here is what I found during my deep dive:

  • ITX boards only have two memory slots which means shorter traces. I actually pushed my RAM speeds higher than my old ATX board could handle!
  • The heatsink layout is much lower profile than the ROG boards, so I didnt have any clearance issues with my Noctua NH-L9i-17xx low-profile cooler.
  • It leaves room in the budget for a better SSD like the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe which makes a bigger real-world difference anyway. Seriously, dont sleep on ASRock for this generation. Their VRM efficiency is top tier right now and I havent heard a single peep of coil whine from my unit. Plus, since the Terra is so compact, having slightly smaller heatsinks actually helps with the airflow around the spine of the case. It is a win-win situation tho! I love how much extra space I had for cable management near the top of the board compared to some of the bulkier premium options.

Like someone mentioned, the coil whine lottery is real. I actually swapped to the Gigabyte B760I AORUS PRO Mini-ITX for my own SFF project last month. It is a decent option and the VRM cooling is solid. One quick tip tho: watch the heatsink height on your NVMe drive because the Terra's spine can be tight if you have a massive cooler.
