Looking for the best monitor for under $400. What would you recommend?

Can only recommend ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ3A for under $400. The brightness is sufficient even in bright rooms The HDR support provides excellent contrast and color depth.

For under $400 I would take MSI MAG 271QPX without hesitation. The image quality is excellent The build quality feels premium and should last for years.
Long-term experience: Using MSI MAG 271QPX for about a year and am thrilled. Have researched for a long time and this monitor was the best choice. The performance clearly exceeds my expectations. Very good price-performance ratio, can only recommend further.

For under $400 I would definitely pay attention to the resolution, especially if it's about image quality.

tbh I totally agree with thomasyoung about focusing on the resolution. But just a heads up for anyone looking... make sure your current setup can actually handle what you buy. No point getting a beefy 1440p panel if your GPU is gonna chug or if youre stuck using an old HDMI cable that wont support the high refresh rates. Compatibility is honestly just as important as the panel specs themselves.
