My old rigs gpu just fried and I need a replacement fast for a tournament next week. I usually know my stuff but the current 40-series pricing is so messy I cant tell what has decent thermals and a mux switch for the price. Which gaming laptop offers the best value under $1500 right now?

Ngl its pretty disappointing how many mid-range laptops cut corners on cooling lately. Checking Jarrods Tech benchmarks shows most 40-series deals under 1500 are a letdown tbh. If you're strictly budget-focused:

  • MSI Katana 15 B13VGK i7-13620H RTX 4070 - build feels cheap but has a MUX switch.
  • Gigabyte G5 KF5 i7-12650H RTX 4060 - loud fans but hits the price point. Check NotebookCheck for sRGB coverage before buying tho... some panels are just sad.

Ngl I was super nervous about picking a replacement but I am really satisfied with the Lenovo i ended up with.

  • Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Gen 8 i7-13700HX RTX 4060: feels very safe and stays cool, no complaints there.
  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 9 7940HS RTX 4060: works well too but felt a bit flimsy to me. Honestly the Legion just feels more reliable and it dont overheat.

@Reply #1 - good point! Legions are built like absolute tanks right now. I am totally obsessed with the mid-range sweet spot this year because you can get some serious power if you look at the TGP ratings! If you need that tournament-ready performance fast, check these out:

  • Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 i7-13700HX RTX 4060
  • This thing is amazing because it uses liquid metal for cooling. It stays super frosty even when you are pushing it hard.
  • HP Victus 16 Ryzen 7 7840HS RTX 4070
  • You can actually find this with a 4070 under 1500 if you catch a sale. The extra VRAM is fantastic for newer titles. Quick tip: Always verify the GPU power limits before buying. A full 140W 4060 will smoke a lower wattage 4070 any day of the week. Also make sure the panel is 100% sRGB so the colors dont look like mud while you are playing. Good luck at the tournament!
