What is actually the best laptop for professional video editing right now because my current setup is completely failing me on this new project. I have been a colorist for about six years now mostly working on a massive PC desktop at my studio here in Chicago but I just signed a huge freelance contract that requires me to be on-site at a production house starting next Wednesday. I thought my old 2019 MacBook Pro could handle it but it is literally thermal throttling just trying to load the 6K RED RAW footage in DaVinci Resolve and its making me super nervous. I have a budget of around $4,500 and I need to buy something like yesterday so I can get it staged. I was looking at the new M3 Max MBP with 64GB of unified memory but I am worried about it handling heavy noise reduction nodes compared to a Windows machine with a dedicated RTX 4090. But then the battery life on those big gaming-style laptops is usually trash and I might not always be near a plug. Should I just stick with Apple or is there a specific PC workstation that wont melt while rendering? I really cant afford for this thing to crash during a client review session next week...

Late to the party but I've been through this exact hardware nightmare before. In my experience, if you're doing heavy color work in Resolve with 6K RED RAW, the unified memory on the Mac is actually more important than a desktop-class GPU. I've tried many setups and here is how it breaks down for your budget:
- Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max 16-core CPU 40-core GPU 128GB Unified Memory
- This is the way. The 128GB helps avoid GPU memory full crashes during complex noise reduction. Plus, it stays quiet during client reviews.
- Razer Blade 16 2024 Intel i9-14900HX RTX 4090 64GB RAM
- This is the pick if you need CUDA. Its a beast for rendering, but the fans sound like a jet engine and battery life is basically a joke. Personally, I'd go Mac for the stability on-site. Don't forget a fast external drive like the Samsung T9 Portable SSD 4TB so you aren't bottlenecked by slow storage while grading!

tl;dr: grab the M3 Max but look for a deal! I totally get the stress! I use the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max 16-CPU 40-GPU 64GB RAM 1TB SSD and it shreds RED RAW in Resolve! Honestly, you dont need to spend the full 4.5k. Check for open-box or EDU discounts to save a few hundred bucks for extra storage. It handles noise reduction like a beast without the fan noise!

Honestly... I was kinda disappointed with how these newer systems handle heavy grading lately. It wasnt as good as expected, unfortunately. Quick question tho, are you using Neat Video or just the native Resolve tools?
- thermal throttling is real
- ui lag IIRC someone told me specialized workstation laptops might be more stable for heavy noise reduction, though I am not 100 percent sure.
