My laptop just died and I have wedding edits due next week. I saw the M3 Max is top tier but others say the Dell XPS is better value, though apparently it overheats bad during 4K exports? Im in Chicago with a $3000 budget and super stressed... what is actually the best 4k editing laptop this year?
TL;DR: High-end gaming laptops have way better cooling for 4K exports than thin-and-lights! Basically, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 Intel i9-14900HX RTX 4080 32GB RAM is honestly fantastic for wedding edits. Since it has massive heat sinks, it wont overheat during those long renders like the XPS does. Its amazing because you get way more thermal headroom for your money. Youll love it and itll save your deadline!
Regarding what #2 said about "TL;DR: High-end gaming laptops have way better cooling..." - unfortunately, many gaming screens are disappointing for color-critical wedding work. Also the XPS you mentioned thermal throttles way too fast for 4K exports, it basically turns into a furnace. Quick question tho, are you using Premiere or Resolve? Changes things for hardware encoding. Tips:
Honestly, you dont need to drop the full 3k to get work done. Ive been really happy with the Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro 12-core CPU 18-core GPU 36GB RAM 1TB SSD for my projects.
