Hey everyone! I am currently looking to upgrade my creative setup and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there. My current laptop is starting to chug whenever I open Premiere Pro, and working on 4K timelines has become almost impossible with the constant stuttering and long render times.

I mainly do a mix of heavy graphic design work in Illustrator and Photoshop, but lately, I have been taking on more high-resolution video projects. I need something that can handle heavy layering and 4K rendering without sounding like it is about to take off. Specifically, I am looking for a machine with at least 32GB of RAM and a display that has top-tier color accuracy, preferably with 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, because color grading is a huge part of my workflow.

I have been eyeing the latest MacBook Pro models, but I am also curious if there are any Windows-based workstations like the Dell XPS or ASUS ProArt series that might offer better value for the specs. I travel quite a bit for shoots, so while power is my main priority, I would prefer something that isn't too bulky to carry around in a backpack all day.

Does anyone here have experience editing 4K footage on a laptop daily? Which specific models or configurations would you recommend for someone who needs both raw power and a professional-grade screen?

saw this earlier but just now responding... honestly i feel u on the 4k struggle. it is so frustrating when premiere starts lagging during a color grade. the mac mentioned is great, but if you want windows, you might want to consider some workstation-grade stuff instead of consumer laptops. check out these resources and options:

  • there is a great resource at RTINGS for actual lab-tested color accuracy stats. dont just trust the box specs!
  • the ASUS ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED H7604 with the physical dial is lowkey amazing for scrubbing timelines and has a killer 100% DCI-P3 screen.
  • maybe look at the Dell Precision 5690 Mobile Workstation over the XPS. it basically has better cooling so it wont sound like it is taking off as much during long renders.
  • pro tip: grab a Calibrite Display Plus HL to make sure your colors stay accurate over time no matter what panel you end up with. i suggest looking at workstations cuz they handle sustained heat better than thin laptops like the xps series... anyway hope that helps a bit.. gl!!

sooo i stumbled onto this thread and i totally feel ur pain with those stuttering timelines... 4k color grading in premiere is basically a massive stress test for any laptop!! before i give full advice, can you clarify what your absolute max budget is?? also do you strictly need a 14-inch screen or is a 16-inch okay if it is still light enough for your backpack? honestly those high-end macs are beasts but the price for ram upgrades is just criminal. if you want actual value, you gotta look at the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ASUS+ Vivobook+Pro+16X+OLED+K6604+32GB+RAM+1TB+SSD+RTX+4070&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">ASUS Vivobook Pro 16X OLED K6604 32GB RAM 1TB SSD RTX 4070. it is usually around $1,850 and that 3.2k oled is LITERALLY gorgeous for color work with 100 percent dci-p3 coverage. another high-key steal is the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 16 Gen 9 32GB RAM 1TB SSD RTX 4070 which i have seen for about $1,700 lately. they both handle 4k rendering super well and wont break the bank like a fully spec'd workstation would... but yeah let me know the budget cuz that helps a lot. gl!

i recommend Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 Max 36GB 1TB over Dell XPS 16 9640 32GB 1TB RTX 4070. mac has better prores encoding and stays way quieter during 4k renders. works well!! gl
