AMD GPUs good for AI or stick to NVIDIA?

Hey all — I’m trying to decide on a GPU upgrade mainly for local AI stuff, and I’m stuck on the big question: are AMD GPUs actually good for AI in 2026, or is it still smarter to just stick with NVIDIA?

For context, I’m not doing enterprise-scale training, but I *do* want a setup that works reliably for running and tinkering with models at home. My current GPU is an older NVIDIA card with 8GB VRAM, and I’m constantly hitting VRAM limits when I try anything beyond smaller models. I’m mostly interested in running local LLMs (like 7B–13B range), experimenting with Stable Diffusion, and occasionally doing light fine-tuning (LoRA-style) without it turning into a weekend-long troubleshooting project.

The reason I’m even considering AMD is price/performance and VRAM. For roughly the same money, I can sometimes find an AMD card with noticeably more VRAM than an NVIDIA option. I’ve got a budget around $700–$900 and I’m aiming for at least 16GB VRAM if possible. I’m also on Linux, and I keep seeing mixed opinions: some people say ROCm is “finally usable,” while others say it’s still a headache compared to CUDA.

I’m not married to any one framework, but I’d like to use common tools like PyTorch and popular model UIs without constantly hunting down special builds or workarounds. Performance matters, but honestly stability + compatibility matters more.

So… if your goal is local AI workloads (LLMs + Stable Diffusion + some fine-tuning), is AMD a solid choice now, or should I just pay the NVIDIA premium and avoid the ecosystem headaches?

Oh man, been there… I tried AMD on Linux for local AI and it worked, but ROCm was still “one update away from pain” for me. Quick q: are you ok pinning distro/driver versions, or do you want it to just work???

Hmm, I’ve had a different experience than reply #1 — imo in 2026 AMD is actually a totally solid pick for *local* AI on Linux, especially if your priority is “more VRAM per dollar.” For LLMs + Stable Diffusion + LoRA tinkering, having 16GB+ VRAM is like… the difference between “it runs” and “why is this swapping??”

Yeah, ROCm can still be a bit picky, but if you’re ok using a supported distro/driver combo and not updating every single week, it’s been pretty stable for me. If you want the least friction with random PyTorch wheels and every UI under the sun, NVIDIA is still the boring safe choice.

So yeah: value/VRAM + willing to pin versions = AMD. Zero-drama compatibility = NVIDIA. What distro are you on?

I pretty much agree with what was said about VRAM being the absolute biggest deal for local AI stuff - it really is the main bottleneck. From the market research I've been doing lately, it seems like the gap is finally closing but it still comes down to what you value more. If you go with NVIDIA, you're basically paying for that "it just works" factor because every new tool or repo is built for them first. But man, their prices for memory are just... not great. On the other hand, if you just grab any high-memory card from AMD, you get so much more breathing room for ur models without spending a fortune. I'm still kind of a newbie at the deeper technical stuff, but it feels like Team Red is becoming a really serious contender for home setups if you don't mind a little extra setup. Tbh, if ur goal is just to run the biggest models possible for the least cash, you can't really go wrong with any of the newer AMD options. Does anyone know if the software side is actually catching up as fast as the hardware is though?

I actually made the jump to AMD recently after years on Team Green, and honestly, I'm super satisfied with how it turned out. I was tired of paying the NVIDIA tax for less VRAM, so I grabbed an ASRock Phantom Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB and haven't looked back. Setup on Linux was way easier than I expected, especially with newer kernels. I mostly tinker with local models and the extra headroom is a godsend for larger quantizations. Here is how I'm running things lately:

  • Switched to using LM Studio for my local LLMs since it handles the backend setup well.
  • Messing around with Text-Generation-WebUI for more complex workflows.
  • Running larger 30B models that my old 8GB card couldn't even dream of loading. It feels good not hitting those VRAM walls every five minutes. If you're comparing it to something like the MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, the AMD card gives you that extra 4GB buffer for a lower price. No complaints here so far, the stability has been solid for my daily tinkering...
