Hey everyone! I am finally looking to upgrade my home workstation and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the current CPU landscape. I have been a loyal Intel user for years, but my current setup is starting to show its age, especially since I have transitioned into shooting almost exclusively in 4K for my freelance clients.
Right now, I am working with a lot of 10-bit 4:2:2 H.265 footage coming off my Sony A7S III. If you have worked with those files, you know they are an absolute nightmare for older processors to decode. I primarily use Premiere Pro for the bulk of my editing and DaVinci Resolve for color grading. My current i7-9700K is just struggling to keep up. Even with proxies, I am seeing significant lag in the timeline, and my render times are honestly starting to hurt my productivity. I just want to be able to scrub through a timeline without the preview window freezing up every five seconds.
I have been eyeing the 14th Gen lineup, but I am torn on which direction to go. Here are a few things I am considering:
I am planning to pair this with a solid Z790 motherboard and 64GB of fast DDR5 RAM. I am just really looking for a system that can handle multiple layers of 4K video and some light After Effects work without crashing or slowing to a crawl.
With the current state of hardware in 2024, which Intel CPU would you guys recommend as the best overall choice for a dedicated 4K video editing rig?
tbh I would go with the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Cores 5.6 GHz. You get the exact same QuickSync hardware as the Intel Core i9-14900K 24-Cores 6.0 GHz, which is what actually makes the 4:2:2 timeline smooth. The i9 is a beast but the thermal issues are real... you spend a lot extra for maybe 5 percent faster exports. Save the cash for more NVMe storage.
I was in your exact shoes a few months back. I do a ton of Sony 10-bit work too, and I actually ended up snagging an Intel Core i9-13900K 24-Cores 5.8 GHz on a deep clearance sale instead of going for the 14th gen. Tbh, the performance difference in Premiere is almost impossible to notice in real-world editing, but the money I saved let me grab an extra Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD for my cache drive. I also tested the Intel Core i7-13700K 16-Cores 5.4 GHz in a friend's build. It handles those nightmare HEVC files just as well because the QuickSync engine is basically identical. If you want to save even more, you could look at Z690 boards... most of them just need a quick BIOS update. I spent way less on my rig by hunting for 13th gen deals and it still crushes 4K timelines without breaking a sweat. It definitely beats paying the 'newest gen' tax for such a small spec bump.
Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
