Im finally upgrading my old rig because scrubbing through 4K timelines is becoming a nightmare. I have about $550 saved up and I'm planning to buy the parts this weekend. I spent hours looking at benchmarks and the i9-14900K seems like the top pick but then I keep seeing these reports about stability issues and it running insanely hot. Then some people say the i7-14700K is basically just as good for Premiere and way easier to cool. I do a lot of heavy color grading so I really dont want any lag while I'm working. Should I risk it with the i9 or is the i7 actually plenty for a 4K workflow in 2024?

Stumbled on this today! Reliability is absolutely paramount for a serious workstation. Before I suggest a path, what case and cooling are you using? The Intel i9-13900K 24-Core 5.8 GHz is amazing for raw power, but those thermals are scary. Ngl, I love the Intel i7-13700K 16-Core 5.4 GHz as a safer choice. It is incredibly stable and the value is fantastic!

I was in your exact shoes a few months back. Picking the Intel Core i7-14700K 3.4 GHz 20-Core Processor for my main workstation was the best move and I am honestly so happy with how it turned out. Ngl, the i9 was tempting but the extra $150 and the potential headache of thermal throttling just didnt seem worth it for a small speed boost. My color grading workflow is butter smooth now even with several layers of effects. It works well and I havent had a single crash since the build. Quick tip for you: dont cheap out on the memory. If youre doing heavy 4K grading, grab Corsair Vengeance DDR5 64GB 6000MHz because Premiere will eat that up way before your CPU hits its limit. The i7 is plenty for 2024 workflows tbh.

I tried building a similar rig last month and unfortunately, the heat was just a nightmare even with a massive cooler. I kept getting these random stutters in DaVinci Resolve that I couldn't pin down. It was super disappointing because everyone hyped up the QuickSync performance for 4K. IIRC, there was a deep dive on Puget Systems website about how some of these high-end chips are basically being pushed way past their limits out of the box. Not sure if it's just bad luck with the silicon lottery or what, but I'm kinda leaning towards the idea that the mid-range might actually be more stable for long rendering sessions. You might wanna check out those Puget Benchmarks before you drop the cash this weekend... they usually show the real gap between the i7 and i9 is way smaller than the price suggests.
